History

In the midst of the rise of electronic music in Argentina, the growth of urban tribes and the increase in interest in urban dance, made young people dedicate themselves to showing their talent and dancing skill. Thus, many young people, through the use of video web portals (such as YouTube, Tu.tv, etc.) began to learn through tutorials. The name Free Step was born in Argentina in mid-2007, by a group of dancers called Electroshocks N.G., who created the name to differentiate the dance from other styles such as Hard Step or the Electro Flogger Dance. They were the ones who quickly promoted this new style of dance and were the first to create their own steps. It exploded and became popular with the Flogger trend and has currently become popular throughout South America, Central America and Mexico.[4] With YouTube as the platform from which it is promoted and constantly updated, the Free Step is becoming a very popular dance in Latin America.[5] Young people share their meetings, competitions, choreographies on the Internet; and they are dedicated to showing other dancers their own style, and expanding the culture through this urban dance.[6][7] The Free Step style was born here as an urban dance in which each dancer created their own line of steps, at the same time combining bases from other styles such as C-Walk, Break Dance, Electro Flogger Dance, or also using the base of Hard Step. It has become very popular among young people. And today it continues to grow.[8] [9]

Description

The dance mixes steps from different dances such as C-Walk (and other derivatives Crown Walk, Clown Walk, etc.), Electro Flogger, Break Dance, Hard Step so it makes a fresher and newer style.

Music

The style of music with which the dance is performed is mainly Electro House, Techno, Minimal and Hard Electro, which are the most abundant among young practitioners of this dance, but it can also be danced with other styles such as Trance and Acid House.

Free Step and Rebolation

While Free Step was growing in Argentina, young people from Brazil were also learning about new genres of electronic music and through the Internet, they also learned about new dance styles originating from Argentina and other countries. The young Brazilians practiced a dance known as Rebolation,[10] which was very similar to the Electro Flogger Dance of Argentina, and the Jumpstyle of other regions of the world. The dance consists of speed, where each dancer tested her ability to follow the music with speed, using jumps typical of Jumpstyle, as well as the turns and steps marked in the Electro Flogger. One of the most popular references of this movement was Teenorio, who among young people became a reference due to his skill in dance. Although the Rebolation demonstrated great skill in maintaining speed and maintaining a line of steps, said dance was limited to few combinations. Most of the Rebolation dancers followed the same line, in which they could implement a few variations, the dance focused on speed and not improvisation. At the end of 2009, the musical band Parangolé created a song called Rebolation, inspired by the dance, but this led to misunderstandings, giving the false idea that which group created the Rebolation dance. The song was a big hit in Brazil, but this generated disgust and rejection among young Brazilians. In order to differentiate their dance from the musical theme and not be related to it, they acquired the name Free Step to apply to their dance. Although both dances were conceived and expanded by young lovers of electronic music and dance, it is important to note that they are not the same dance. Today, this difference is a source of dispute among young people from different parts of the world, who seek to know the true origin of the term Free Step. [11]

Differences With Other Styles

There are various types of dance that combine steps from different styles (For example: Free Step, Shuffle, C-Walk, Electro Flogger Dance, Electro Dance, JumpStyle, among others.) so much so that, at first glance, it is common to confuse them. However, the difference is in the movements:

  • Free Step - just as its name says - is a free dance in which each person creates their own steps and combinations as long as they go to the rhythm of electronic music. When a dancer is dancing she can implement steps and combinations from other dance styles, such as those mentioned above, to make a more attractive choreography with her own combinations.
  • The Melbourne Shuffle focuses on slides, turns, and running without moving, in addition to the shuffle having as steps the movements of the hands with which they do tricks with the cap.
  • The Electro Flogger Dance specializes in heel strikes to the ground, prolonging the legs, soft slides and creating illusory effects such as floating, walking without moving and intertwining the legs at high speed.
  • Jumpstyle is based on jumps and different types of skills follow the rhythm of HardStyle music.
  • Electro Dance is a dance from France where each dancer demonstrates their skill in the movement of their arms, taking basic elements of glowsticking such as the concept of free hands, the figures in the shape of eight, and the idea of the leading hand in a scheme called liquid (one hand following the other in geometric movements).
  • The C-Walk is an urban dance that emerged as a code among gangsters in the slums of New York and other American cities. He uses Hip Hop or Rap music to implement his steps, it is characterized by faster and more dynamic leg movements. Later its variants would appear such as the Crown Walk, the Clown Walk, etc.
