The Winawer Variation of the French Defense is a chess opening characterized by the following moves:
- e4 e6
- d4 d5
- Nc3 Bb4
The Winawer is among the sharpest and most popular lines of the French Defense. White gets doubled pawns, whereas Black gets the bishop pair.
