From TV Animation - One Piece: Luffy's Dream Pirate Crew! (ONE PIECE (ワンピース) 夢のルフィ海賊団誕生!, Wan Pīsu: Yume no Rufi Kaizoku dan Tanjou!) is a Japan-exclusive Strategy/Role Playing game for the Gameboy Color. It is the first video game to be based on the One Piece manga and anime for the Gameboy Color.[2]

Release[edit]

The game released in Japan on April 27, 2001 for the Gameboy Color for 4,500 Yen.[3]

Fan Translation[edit]

The game did not receive any official release outside of Japan. A group of translators going by Star Trinket Team had plans of translating the game as far back as March 2018.[4] The fan translation patch being completed at some point after then. Due to Star Trinket Team's website being taken down at some point, the translation patch has been rendered difficult to find

Plot[edit]

The game's plot is an adaptation of One Piece's East Blue Saga, with some additional original and altered scenarios. Since the game's events can be approached in any order the story plays out differently depending on what characters you have and have not recruited. The game also alters some plot beats for the sake of gameplay, such characters like Gaimon joining the strawhats when they previously did not or extending others such as having to look for limes to assist Johnny and Yosaku. Some of the original scenarios in game include being able to recruit the antagonists, such as Captain Kuro or Don Krieg found throughout the game. Others include the Strawhat Pirates coming into conflict with original antagonists.

Gameplay[edit]

Main game[edit]

The player controls Monkey D. Luffy on an over-world representing the islands and ocean of One Piece's East Blue. From this open world he can maneuver around to find items, enter buildings, talk to characters, and progress the story. Random battles can also occur while traversing the over-world. These battles take place on a grid that the playable characters move around to use their attacks and Finishers to defeat the enemies the player finds themself facing.

Each character having their own attack range, the grid spaces a character can attack, and movement range, the range in which a character can move. There are also have unique Finishers that have their own unique attack ranges. Other actions can also be performer, such as Item (which uses pre-equipped items), Status (which can examine an enemy's attributes), or Wait (which skips a character's turn). When an enemy is attacked or defeated, the character who attacked or defeated the enemy gain Experience Points, and once they have enough they will level up increasing their various attributes.

Reception[edit]

As of December 30th 2001 the game has sold 361,158 copies in Japan [5]
