History

The Nigerian eponymous brand Funke Adepoju was born in 2015[1] from the original brand Phunkafrique, which was created[2] in 2005 by creative director Olufunke Adepoju.

Early Career

As a student at Igbinedion University, Olufunke began dabbling in design by re-purposing and reconstructing old t-shirts and skirts for her classmates. Using beading and embellishments, she was able to give new life to what were once old clothing items. In 2005, upon graduating, Funke saw her passion for dressing women grow beyond re-purposing old clothes, to creating original pieces to celebrate the gorgeousness of women. Funke presented her original pieces for the first time at a networking event in Lagos. Phunk Afrique’s first collection, ‘With Love From Lagos’, was released in 2008[2] and consisted of bespoke pieces for women. Months after the release, the brand extended its reach into ready-to-wear and experimented with children's clothing. In 2009, Phunk Afrique won the City People award for Best Designer of the Year. Also in 2009, the designer opened her first showroom in Lagos[3].

Rebranding

In 2015, Phunk Afrique rebranded and changed its name to Funke Adepoju[1]. Funke Adepoju came about as a result of the maturity of the creative director's vision and working on appealing to a more sophisticated aspect of the brand to cater to its ever-growing audience. The whimsical, fresh, and on-trend Phunkafrique was retained as a diffusion line to ensure all women of all ages, body types, and ways of life are satisfied by the brand fully.

Fashion Shows

Over the years, the brand has proudly showcased its collections at:

  • MTN Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2011[4]
  • ARISE Fashion Week 2012[5]
  • GTB Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2014[6]
  • Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2015[7]
