Search Furude Rika on Amazon.Furude Rika (Japanese: 古手 梨花) is a fictional character who appears in the visual novel, manga , and anime series Higurashi When They Cry. She was voiced by Yukari Tamura, Aika, Shiki Aoki, and was later played in the stage play by the latter.

Literary role

She is effectively the protagonist of the Higurashi When They Cry franchise up until the Nekodamashi-hen arc, after which Satoko Houjo, her former best friend, becomes the protagonist of the franchise according to Ryukishi07, her creator.[1] In the original series, from a narrative standpoint, she initially is framed as a secondary character, which after the "Answer Arcs" reveals her true protagonistic role in the story.[2][3] She is a core character of the story, and her very essential role is slowly revealed as the story progresses.[2][4]

A table of the syuzhet that exist within certain episodes of the anime series of "Higurashi When They Cry" (2006). The syuzhet are directly tied to Rika's role within the story and her time looping ability which allows the viewer (and her) to elaborate theories and conviction in successive episodes/arcs in what is called "Complete television" by the author (Loriguillo López).[5]

It can be said that within the context of the visual novels, Rika takes on the same role as the "player", aware of her sorroundings and that her world plays along defined "algorithms" which, if acted upon, can get a specific outcome. This player-character connection strenghtens her role as a protagonist.[3] This occurs through the constant deaths of Rika which function as a "trial and error" experience (for Rika) and exercise (for the reader/player). This forces both Rika and the reader/player to invest themselves in what has been labelled as "complete television" as both are included within the mental effort as to discover the real dynamics of the story and find a resolution.[6]

Development

In 2000 Ryukishi07 had written "Hinamizawa Bus Stop", which is considered to be Higurashi When They Cry's prototype.[7] In this prototype version, Rika Furude appeared and whilst most of her design features were relatively the same, she was significantly older.[8]

Description

Rika is the only daughter of the deceased Mr. and Mrs. Furude, and she is the last member of the Furude family, one of the three most influential families in the small village of Hinamizawa. She serves as the shrine maiden during the annual June “Watanagashi” festival. She is believed to be the reincarnation of "Oyashiro-sama" by some of the people residing in Hinamizawa, the deity of the village. Thus, she is treated as such by many. She addresses friends and members of the Three Great Families by their first names without honorifics, while referring to others by their last names without honorifics. Her hair is purple like wisteria, characterized by neatly trimmed bangs and waist-length hair. She is 4'6 (137 cm). She is approximately sixth-grade age, thus 11 or 12 years old (depictions in the Time-Killing Arc, set in 1978, show her already enrolled in elementary school; thus, she is presumed to be in sixth grade in 1983). Her birthday is August 21st.[9][10][11]

As a hobby, she likes to secretly drink wine (from Bernkastell) behind Satoko's (her best friend) back.[12] This was changed in later chapters to "grape juice" in some adaptations due to concerns regarding giving a bad example of underage drinking to the audience. She also likes to just hang out with her friends Rena, Satoko, Keiichi, Mion and sometimes Shion for club activities.[13]

She is the emobodiment of the "cute girl with too much knowledge" manga/anime archetype. Her knowledgment of the world around her determined her manipulative traits, which are, however, not necessarily malevolent in the context of the series.[14] Her mentality has been described in interviews as one of an adult stuck in a kid's body,[15] and her behaviour shows signs that align with post-traumatic stress disorder aswell as hints of a dissociative disorder.[16] By the time the series starts, a century of loops have passed.[2]

The only time she is seen with a weapon is when she carries a syringe with anesthetic poison,[17] an anti rape spray and in the video game Higurashi Daybreak she is seen fighting with a rake.[18]

Role and character development in canonical works

Premises

When Rika was born she could already see Hanyuu, also known as Oyashiro-sama, who is her direct ancestor (8 generations away). She soon became friends with her, and was the only character able to see her up until the end of the original series.

Rika is arguably the true protagonist of "Higurashi When They Cry" and in most timelines she is destined to be killed just to loop again into another timeline.[15][19][20] Rika is able to remember most of the timelines up until her death in that universe, allowing her to adapt and scheme in order to survive in the next one.[2][21] She only manages to escape such fate thanks to the help of Hanyuu at the end of the original manga/anime/visual novel series.[22]

Additionally, she is an infected individual known as the "Queen Carrier" of Hinamizawa Syndrome, a local disease which caused paranoia, psychosis and itchiness to the lymph nodes. It is said that when she dies, patients with Hinamizawa Syndrome go berserk. She goes to the Irie Clinic for a checkup at least once a week with her best friend Satoko. She herself is aware that she is infected with Hinamizawa Syndrome. Her mother often clashed with Takano over the fact that she was being used as research material for Hinamizawa Syndrome, before her mother was killed by Takano's orders.[9]

She is connected with the franchise of Umineko When They Cry through her connection with the character Bernkastel, which is made of all negative emotions of all Rikas across all timelines.[23][24] Rika's dialogues in Higurashi are often coupled with Bernkastel's in-game poems, hinting early on both a connection with her and the fact that Rika is aware of the loops due to the contents of such poems.[25]

Higurashi When They Cry: Onikakushi-hen

Since her first appearance in Onikakushi-hen Rika showcases a calm, serene and sagacious attitude which hints early on that she is wiser then what she lets on.[14][26] In this chapter she merely plays the role of one of Keiichi's friends.[27] By the end of the chapter Rika is tied to the series of mysterious deaths for the first time when it is mentioned that Rika's parents were part of the victims.[11][28]

Higurashi When They Cry: Watanagashi-hen

In Watanagashi-hen Rika's role continues to be partly only being Keiichi's friend,[29] however, it becomes more obvious then in the last chapter that she is not fully innocent as she pretends to be and that her role in the story is not merely that after all.[30] Rika's main role in this chapter comes when Keiichi confesses he sneaked in the ritual storehouse to Rika, followed by Rika and Satoko disappearance.[31] By the end of the chapter it is revealed Rika was kidnapped, tortured and her body was disposed in a well within the Sonozaki residence.[32] In this chapter Takano Miyo's theory, according to which everyone would go insane after 48 hours of Rika's death due to her role as the "queen carrier of Hinamizawa syndrome" is proven wrong, and thus an emergency plan to exterminate the whole village (which is revealed later on in the story) is never triggered,[33] showing that her grandparent's theories regarding Hinamizawa syndrome are wrong or at least flawed.[34]

Higurashi When They Cry: Tatarigoroshi-hen

At the start of the chapter Rika, alonsgide with Satoko, intervine just in time to save Keiichi from causing a house fire. By the end of the chapter she is found mostly naked and dead on the grounds of the Furude shrine as her intestines is all over the place and the crows around her consume the contents of her organs.[35] The way she dies is a first hint at her later role in the story and the dynamics sorrounding her.

Higurashi When They Cry: Himatsubushi-hen

This chapter takes place earlier then the other loops, in 1978,[36] meaning Rika would be around six to seven years old.[11] The point of view is no longer from Keiichi's perspective, but rather from Akasaka's perspective, a detective that has come to Hinamizawa to investigate the disappearance of a person.[37] Rika in this episode is presented as even more mysterious and even creepy,[37] giving warnings to Akasaka and monitoring his actions.[36] This is the first chapter to expose evidently the time looping abilities of Rika Furude and her motives being to happily live past June 1983 with her friends.[36][37] Some reviews however deem that Rika was "short changed" within this arc.[38]

Higurashi When They Cry: Meakashi-hen

This chapter is a repeat of the Watanagashi-hen arc but from Shion Sonozaki's perspective between the years of 1982 and 1983.[39] As teased in the anime during the Watanagashi-hen arc Rika kills herself as to avoid being tortured once again by Shion and to loop to the next world.[33]

Higurashi When They Cry: Tsumihoroboshi-hen

Rika's full capabilities are now fully understandable to the reader, and she seems to have given up hope, at least initially. However, once Keiichi Maebara restores ones of the memories his own past (Onikakushi-hen), Rika's regains the will to challenge destiny and works togheter with her friends as to subdue a berserk Rena. They suceed but at the end of the day she once again loops at the end of it, being killed again.[40]

Higurashi When They Cry: Minagoroshi-hen

This chapter is mostly from the point of view of Rika Furude. The events of Tatarigoroshi-hen repeat once again at the start, leaving Rika feeling hopeless especially after the failure of the past timelines. However, thanks to the help of her friends and everyone in the village, Satoko is rescued, breaking Rika's expectations and once again showing her things can change. After that though it is unravaled that her killer is indeed Takano, who wants to kill her before "Tokyo" (an in-universe far right organization) shuts her program down. The club struggles to save Rika, and at the end succumb to Takano who kills them all. Rika later convinces Hanyuu, along with her friend, to join the fight against destiny in the next loop.[41]

Higurashi When They Cry: Matsuribayashi-hen

In this chapter Rika initially forgets the previous timeline, but thanks to the help of Hanyuu, and later on her friends and allies, manages to defeat Takano and her minions (The Mountain Dogs), ending the original series' narrative arc in a happy note.[42][43] In a secret ending, Rika, in the form of Bernkastel, goes even further back in time and resolves Takano's, the main antagonist of the series, childhood complications, preventing the events of the story.[citation needed]

Higurashi When They Cry Gou

After escaping the loops, in Higurashi When They Cry Gou she starts to yearn to leave Hinamizawa and to enter upper class society by enrolling in the prestigious St Lucia Highschool, where previously, her acquaintance Shion Sonozaki, was enrolled.[44] This is a way for Rika to distance herself from the trauma caused by the original narrative arc and move on.[16] She asks Satoko to enroll togheter as she wants her best friend by her side during this big change,[44] however not taking into account Satoko's feelings.[45] After studying hard, both get in the prestigious highschool, however, whilst Rika actually adapts to the social norms and expectations of the highschool, Satoko finds difficulty doing so and feels like Rika and her are growing distant,[44] whilst, at the same time, Satoko becomes obsessed and dependent on Rika.[1] Rika becomes a diligent student and adopts the high class social etiquette of the highschool, shaping her personality around it.[46]

Their relationship starts to take a turn for the worse after Rika confronts Satoko about her manners and prompts her to follow the highschool's strict etiquette, which Satoko ignores. When Rika's friends criticize Satoko, she goes on to defend her and point out her good qualities, showing she still cares about her. For old times' sake Satoko plays a prank on Rika and Rika's friends by dropping multiple metal wash bins on them, however, ending up hurting her friends. Satoko later gets punished by being confined in an in-school prison, and despite Rika not being the real cause of it, Satoko suspects she is, causing further falling out. Rika's new personality drops around her old friend when there's a renewed reunion with her Hinamizawa's friends.[23][46] After Satoko meets Eua, and after her first loop, Satoko kills Rika, kickstarting the events that follow in the series.[47]

So, after 5 years from the original series, Rika is once again stuck in June 1983.[43] She attempts to initially reach some sort of positive resolution to the scenarios presented to her by using the information she has to her disposal; However, she is soon presented with entirely new scenarios she had never seen before in her past loops.[48] Eventually she gives up on leaving Hinamizawa, and the easiest timeline yet unravels as all of the original series' problems are resolved. But Rika grows suspicious of Satoko, and she ultimately manages to expose her, setting the grounds for the following season.[49]

Higurashi When They Cry Sotsu

After a series of confrontation and a fight, Satoko and Rika come to terms and adjust their friendship accordingly,[50] allowing each others to head towards their own path, with Satoko staying in Hinamizawa with his uncle, whilst Rika flees Hinamizawa once again, striving to rejoin St. Lucia once again.[51]

Appearances outside of canonicity

Higurashi When They Cry: Kira

In this short season of episodes, Rika becomes a magical girl in order to save her friends from the curse of Oyashiro.[52]

Higurashi When They Cry Rei: Onishi-hen

Rika Furude appears in Higurashi When They Cry Rei: Onishi-hen, written by Natsumi Kei and inspired by the original series.[53][54] The story is set in 2019, at the start of the Reiwa era, when Rika decides to come back to Hinamizawa and investigate a series of events similiar to those of the original series that have been occuring for the last two consecutive years. She loops over and over with the power given by a jewel gifted by Hanyuu, but she eventually meets a dead end.[54] After an incident Rika is paralized and stuck in a hospital.[53] Due to her precarious situation, she decides it is best to entrust her hopes and dreams in one person,[53] Keitaro, who is the son of the deceased Keiichi Maebara.[55][56]

Voice actors and actress

Aika plays Rika in the live action adaption on the first chapter of the visual novel series which was directed and written by Ataru Oikawa, and premiered in Japanese theaters on May 10, 2008.[57][58][59]

Rika was voiced in Japanese by Yukari Tamura,[60][61][62] Shiki Aoki and Aika.[57][63] Her english dub actress in the Gou and Sotsu series is Apphia Yu.[64]

In the stage play, Rika is played by Shiki Aoki.[65]

Cameos and use in partnerships

The navigation app MAPLUS has Rika Furude in its character change setting. If selected, she guides the user with semi personalized lines that help the user navigate.[66] She appeared in a promotional crossover illustration between Higurashi When They Cry: Sotsu and The Fruit of Grisaia alongside the character Thanatos.[67]

A collab occured between Last Period and Higurashi When They Cry. In this collab, Rika was one of the characters featured.[68] Rika makes an appearance in Super Heroine Chronicles as a playable character through a partnership.[69]

Reception and legacy

Rika's popularity within the fanbase of the series changed overtime, but she was always within the top 6 characters of the series, peaking as the second most popular, never being first despite being one of the key characters of the story.

On 17 October 2004, Rika placed fifth in the very first public popularity poll ever had on the series by official sources. This took place one month after the release of the Himatsubashi arc.[70] On 19 March 2005, after the release of the second ever popularity poll, Rika placed sixth, her worst result ever.[71] On 23 October 2005, just a few months later, after the release of the Tsumihoroboshi arc, she had jumped back to fourth place, surpassing her rating held back in 2004.[72] On 5 April 2006 she once again placed fourth, thus keeping her position, shortly after the release of the Minagoroshi arc,[73] and did so aswell one year later on 23 April 2007.[74] In the same year, 2007, Rika and Keiichi were voted as the third most popular duo in the series.[75] In 2012 Rika placed third as the most popular character of the series,[76] and in 2015, Rika was voted as the second most popular character in the series. Her best result yet. More recently, in 2020, Rika was voted the 4th most popular character in the series,[77] falling back to the avarage rating she had in the 2000s.

Rika's catchphrase "Nipah" has been popularized, it has no meaning and it is merely used by the character as a cutesy behaviour.[78]

Rika's power to loop and the way it influences the story and is unraveled is an example of "complete television" which has influenced other works and is part of a wider pop culture trend within anime.[5]
