Fuyo Kishimoto (born 20 December 1911) is a Japanese supercentenarian who is currently Japan's second oldest living person, after Shigeko Kagawa, the oldest known living person in Kyoto Prefecture and the seventh oldest living person in the world.[1]
Biography
Fuyo Kishimoto was born in Hamasaka, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan on December 20, 1911 during the reign of the Emperor Meiji. She was married twice, and had one children from each of her husbands, whom she raised mostly alone since her last husband died in World War II.
As a young woman, she used to work alongside men in the mountains and mines, but in her 60s she moved to Kyoto Prefecture, where she worked at a school lunch center until her mid-80s. She commuted on foot over a significant distance daily for several years: this regular physical activity might be a critical factor in preserving her health during senescence. A devoted Buddhist, she used to recite sutras from memory for over 3 hours per day, even until her very late age.[2]
At the age of 99, and again at 100, she suffered from femoral fractures and moved into nursing home, starting to regularly use a wheelchair.[2] She became the oldest living person in Kyoto Prefecture in September 2024.
