FydeOS is an operating system based on the open source project Chromium OS, which uses the Linux kernel and includes both a browser platform and container technology. Its interface is similar to that of Chrome OS and it can run on x86 and ARM hardware platforms. A platform with FydeOS installed supports the latest web application standards, is compatible with Android apps and the Linux environment, and provides a user experience similar to that of a Chromebook.[3]
History[edit]
Flint OS[edit]
Originally named Flint OS, FydeOS was founded in 2015[4][5] and released its 0.1 version on October 28, 2016, which was compatible with the Raspberry Pi hardware platform.[1] It soon attracted the attention of some Raspberry Pi enthusiasts.[6][7]
FydeOS[edit]
On March 6, 2018, FlintOS was acquired by Neverware, with the UK-based FlintOS company and overseas business now owned by Neverware. The version with localization features for mainland China was renamed FydeOS.[8]
Features[edit]
FydeOS provides users with an independent account system to ensure a consistent login experience across different devices. It also offers Air programming upgrade services and runs in the background silently.[9]
In FydeOS's security mode, users can only use verified and signed programs from the built-in App Store to ensure system security and controllability. Although it is based on Chromium OS, FydeOS does not include Google Play and its suite, but users can install them on their own.[10][11]
Releases[edit]
As of September 2022, FydeOS officially offers three releases:
- FydeOS for PC: Designed for most PC devices with Intel CPU and its core graphics card produced after 2010.
- FydeOS for You: Customized for designated devices and supports device-based derivative features.
- FydeOS for VMware: Adapted for VMware virtual machine clients.[12]
Hardware[edit]
On September 30, 2022, FydeOS announced the release of its inaugural hardware product, the Fydetab Duo. This device is powered by an ARM processor RK3588S and boasts 8GB of DDR4X memory. Initially, the Fydetab Duo was made available for purchase via the crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo.[13]
Reception[edit]
Arol Wright of XDA Developers believes that FydeOS's "China first" strategy and support for Android applications make it different from other Chromium OS branches and may attract more users.[10]
