FydeOS is an operating system based on the open source project Chromium OS, which uses the Linux kernel and includes both a browser platform and container technology. Its interface is similar to that of Chrome OS and it can run on x86 and ARM hardware platforms. A platform with FydeOS installed supports the latest web application standards, is compatible with Android apps and the Linux environment, and provides a user experience similar to that of a Chromebook.[3][4]

History[edit]

Flint OS[edit]

Originally named Flint OS, FydeOS was founded in 2015[5][6] and released its 0.1 version on October 28, 2016, which was compatible with the Raspberry Pi hardware platform.[1] It soon attracted the attention of some Raspberry Pi enthusiasts.[7][8]

FydeOS[edit]

On March 6, 2018, FlintOS was acquired by Neverware, with the UK-based FlintOS company and overseas business now owned by Neverware. The version with localization features for mainland China was renamed FydeOS.[9]

Features[edit]

FydeOS provides users with an independent account system to ensure a consistent login experience across different devices. FydeOS also provides users with Air programming upgrade services and runs in the background in a silent manner.[10]

In FydeOS's security mode, users can only use verified and signed programs from the built-in App Store to ensure system security and controllability. The built-in App Store can also distribute exclusive applications for different usage scenarios and customize installation policies to manage user-installed programs.[10]

Although it belongs to the branch of Chromium OS, FydeOS does not include Google Play and its suite, as most Google services are unavailable in China, but users can install them on their own.[11][12]

Releases[edit]

As of September 2022, FydeOS officially offers three releases, and users can download and experience the appropriate version according to different usage scenarios.[13]

  • FydeOS for PC is a general release of FydeOS, which is designed to adapt to most PC devices with Intel CPU and its core graphics card produced after 2010. The first startup requires booting from a USB storage medium.
  • FydeOS for You is a release version specially customized by FydeOS for designated devices and supports some device-based derivative features. Generally, if the user's computer is in the list of supported devices for FydeOS for You, the official recommendation is to use the corresponding FydeOS for You version.
  • FydeOS for VMware is a release version of FydeOS specially adapted for VMware virtual machine clients. Only the FydeOS for VMware client image file needs to be downloaded, and imported according to the guide to experience most of the functions of FydeOS on all mainstream operating systems with VMware clients installed.

Hardware[edit]

On September 30, 2022, FydeOS announced the release of its inaugural hardware product, the Fydetab Duo. This device is powered by an ARM processor RK3588S and boasts 8GB of DDR4X memory. Initially, the Fydetab Duo was made available for purchase via the crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo.[14]

Reception[edit]

Arol Wright of XDA Developers believes that FydeOS's "China first" strategy and support for Android applications make it different from other Chromium OS branches and may attract more users.[11]
