G.One (Hindi: जी.वन; Full: Good One), is a fictional video game superhero that first appeared in the 2011 Bollywood science fiction film, Ra.One, written and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The character is portrayed by Shahrukh Khan.

Background

The first-look poster of Ra.One showed Shahrukh Khan in a new avatar and text stating "Introducing G.ONE", the name of the character played by Khan.[2] Khan revealed in an interview that G.One and Ra.One were created from electricity. They come from the virtual world into the real one, on a plane created from electromagnetic waves around us.[3] Ra.One is the villain to G.One, a character portrayed by Arjun Rampal. Shah Rukh Khan also stated that the concept of both G.One and Ra.One comes from ancient Indian mythology: "Ra.One is the modern, new-age technology version of our mythological "Raavan", who was a mixture of ten different evil characters. I am essaying the role of G.One, or better said "Jeevan", a superhero who saves mankind from Ra.One's torment. Through this film, I want to prove that Indian superheroes can also be as cool as the international ones.[4]"

Biography

When Shekhar's son gives him the idea of creating a game in which the villain is stronger than the hero, he quickly develops Ra.One, with G.One being the hero, but less powerful. The night Ra.One is launched, Shekhar's son, Prateek, plays the game facing Ra.One with his game-name Lucifer, while everyone is partying. Akashi, a game designer, then detects a problem with the game and is very worried when he reads the message Lucifer shall die. Just as Shekhar is about to go home, Akashi stops him and tells him that the game will not shut off. Shekhar tells his wife and son to go home, saying he'll be back in a few hours. He does see the problem just as Ra.One comes out of the game, kills Akashi and takes his form. Shekhar, upon seeing the framework where Ra.One's model was standing broken and seeing Akashi's body, leaves the building and heads home to warn his family about Ra.One, but is stopped by Ra.One, who asks him if he was Lucifer. Shekhar, in a desperate attempt to save his son, lies that he is indeed Lucifer. But Ra.One scans his ID card and discovers he is lying and kills him in the street, dumping him and his Volkswagen into the river.

After Shekhar's funeral, Shekhar's wife sees no point in staying in the UK and decides to move to India, but Prateek (a.k.a. Lucifer) notices burn marks in the street showing Shekhar's death was not an accident and tries to find out what killed him. He discovers the truth and conveys it to one of his father's co-workers, who believes him after seeing the evidence and realises that the only way to stop Ra.One is G.One, who is still in the game. She uses the same method to bring G.One out of the game but fails the first time. Then Prateek notices the H.A.R.T. and connects it to G.One's mannequin and succeeds. The first thing G.One does is fight Ra.One. He takes Ra.One by surprise and succeeds in taking out his H.A.R.T. After the fight, Sonia gets ready to leave for India with Prateek but realises at the last moment that G.One has to come with them. Thus, they all go to India and begin living in Shekhar's old house. It is shown that Sonia and Prateek begin thinking that G.One has Shekhar's soul in himself. G.One was designed to look like Shekhar, and he was also given a folder of proverbs that enables him to say Shekhar's favourite sayings. G.One struggles to understand emotions and claims it is not part of his programming.

Throughout the film, the three bond, and Sonia and Prateek develop strong feelings towards G.One. Then Ra.One recreates himself and continues his search. After playing many bizarre tricks, he manages to kidnap Prateek and hypnotise Sonia. G.One first saves Sonia and then tries to save Prateek. But, to do that, he has to face Ra.One. He survives the first two levels but, in the third and final level, Ra.One creates an illusion which divides him into ten exact copies of himself and challenges G.One to shoot him in the H.A.R.T. First, both G.One and Prateek are confused, then Prateek realises that the key is hidden in his father's sayings. He thinks of the last saying in G.One's folder—"every bad-doer leaves a shadow behind"—and notices that of the ten Ra.Ones, only one has a shadow. G.One shoots him in his H.A.R.T. and kills him. The pieces of Ra.One shower down from the explosion, and G.One protects Prateek from them. G.One dies from this after saying he thinks he will miss Prateek. He returns with Ra.One pieces in him back to the game world, telling Prateek that this was the plan all along.

Six months later, it is shown that Prateek and Sonia have moved back to the UK. Prateek has been trying very hard to resurrect G.One, as he has his H.A.R.T., which had been partially destroyed. He finally manages to repair the H.A.R.T., and G.One reappears; it is hinted that G.One will continue to live with Sonia and Prateek.

Powers displayed throughout the film

Electrical manipulation

G.One can control and absorb blue electricity, which he can use to heal himself and discharge as energy balls.

H.A.R.T. disabling gun

After reaching level 3, both G.One and Ra.One can manifest guns which contain one bullet that can disable a H.A.R.T. if it strikes one of them while the body and the H.A.R.T. are connected. G.One's gun resembles a double-barrelled pistol.

Ability to cure mind control

G.One can cure a person who was being controlled by Ra.One. However, this ability is not 100% verifiable as Sonia is the only person G.One cures.

Suction and propulsion jump

G.One can jump huge distances using his Suction and Propulsion shoes.

Massive strength

G.One has superhuman strength. However, in contrast to Ra.One, it is far less.

Personality

G.One is far less destructive than Ra.One. When he first meets Sonia and Prateek, he is only programmed to follow instructions given to him by Lucifer (Prateek). Later, whenever he is given a command, he utters 'Decision Taken'. He knows many languages, just like Ra.One. He cannot understand emotions as they are not compatible with his syntax. He almost has no expression normally. However, when he is proved right, he does smile.

Shahrukh Khan launches 'Ra.One' – Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 560Ti graphic card

In July, Red Chillies Entertainment declared a tie-up with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) to build a full-cycle game of the film on PlayStation.[6] Released on 5 October at an event in Mumbai, "Ra.One – The Game" offers more than 20 game environments, features original voice-overs from the actors and is available on PS2 and PS3; the former being available for the Indian market and the latter for the international market. The project boasts of a series of firsts: a first full-cycle Blu-ray PS3 game developed with an Indian developer; the first console game to be dubbed by a leading Bollywood actor and also the first Bollywood title to appear as a full-cycle PlayStation game.[7]

On 14 October, a gaming tournament titled "The Ra.One Nvidia GeForce LAN" was held in Mumbai. The event, which hosted over 1000 gamers competing against each other, featured several popular games such as "FIFA", "Counter-Strike" and "Call of Duty", and was telecast live on YouTube, showcasing digital innovation by means of live interactive contests, puzzles, etc.[8]

In addition to launching the video game, Red Chillies also collaborated with UTV Indiagames to design a social game based on the film named Ra.One Genesis.[9] The game reached the No. 1 position on the iTunes store within 24 hours of its launch, becoming the first ever Bollywood movie app to be top-featured on iPhone and iPad.[10] An investment of around 45 million (US$630,000), the storyline of the game is not borrowed from or similar to that of the movie, though it is based on the character of G.One. The game was launched across platforms like mobiles, tablet computers, the direct-to-home platform and social networking sites like Facebook.[9] According to the company's digital and new media head Shailja Gupta, the idea behind the digital marketing is to create a franchise for Ra.One. She explained, "Social gaming is just one part of the digital marketing strategy. The unique part of the social game is the integration of merchandise and gaming."[9]
