GECMUN

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

GECMUN is a Korean Model United Nations on Jeju Island's global education city. It is an event hosted by three schools of GEC(KIS, NLCS, BHA). This event has been held since 2015 and is planned to be held in February at the ICC Jeju (International Convention Center) every year. GECMUN states its motto and goal to “Change the game” of Korean MUN conferences, and to pursue a creative, fun debate environment. It is also known for being the first official Korean MUN conference to have a ‘Crisis committee’.[1]

History

GECMUN1

The first ever GECMUN conference, GECMUN1, was held on February 27–28, 2015, at Korean International School. It consisted of a total of 100 delegates from 5 different international schools in South Korea (KIS Jeju, NLCS, BHA, BIS Canada, KIS). It had 5 committees: UNSC, UNICEF, World Bank, Yugoslavia 1948, and the Trojan War Committee. It has some historical distinctions of being the first MUN conference at a global education city, the first Korean MUN conference to have a crisis committee, and the first historical MUN committee on Jeju Island. The event was hosted by KIS and mainly led by Nicholas Harris, the director of GECMUN and KIS Jeju MUN. After this conference, it was listed in the Best Delegate website’s database.

GECMUN2

The second GECMUN conference, GECMUN2, was held on February 20–21, 2016, at the ICC Jeju (International Convention Center Jeju). It had about 130 delegates from 8 international schools in South Korea (KIS Jeju, NLCS, BHA, YISS, GSIS, and independent delegates from a Japanese international school). GECMUN2 showed major improvements compared to the first in many aspects. The first key difference is the change of location to the ICC. This change signified that the conference was upgrading itself from a small MUN conference to a large, official MUN conference. It also had 3 more schools participating, increasing the number of delegates and committees. With the increased participation, the budget was also increased, enabling the conference to provide water bottles, notebooks, nation flag pins, and pens.[2]

Schedule

The current schedule (GECMUN2) is a total of 3 days: the day before the conference and the two conference days. In GECMUN2, KIS provided accommodation for delegates from outside Jeju Island for the 2 days of the conference. Breakfast and dinner were held at KIS, with lunch provided at the conference. The first day started with an opening ceremony, and the conference was divided into 3 sessions. The second day was divided into 2 sections and ended 30 minutes earlier with a closing ceremony.[3]
