GNV Aurora
GNV Aurora is a 218.00-metre LNG-powered Ro-Pax cruise ferry owned and operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV). Built in 2026 by Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, she is the second in a new generation of eco-friendly LNG dual-fuel ferries for GNV. Equipped with cold ironing capabilities and four main engines producing 41,400 kW, she operates major Tyrrhenian routes connecting mainland Italy with Sicily.
Service
The ferry, the last of a series of four sister units, as well as the second unit to be powered by LNG, was built in the COMEC shipyard in Canton with the name of GNV Aurora and delivered on 29 January 2026 to Grandi Navi Veloci.[1][2][3][4] On 10 February, just under two weeks after delivery, the ferry then left the Chinese shipyard for Genoa, where it arrived on 6 March,[5][6][7][8][9] after having made a stopover in Sète the previous day, during which it carried out cold ironing tests, as already carried out a few months earlier by its sister ship GNV Orion.[10]
On 18 March it finally entered service on the connections between Genoa and La Goletta, initially replacing the La Suprema, and from 5 May also operating on the connections to Palermo. On 15 April, one month after entering service, it was announced that the ferry will operate from 1 June, the day on which it was to be christened in Tangier, on the connections between Genoa, Barcelona and the nearby port of Tangier Med, where it will be joined on 1 July by its sister ship GNV Virgo.[11][2][12][13] Following this, as expected, the ferry was christened in Morocco by godmother Gina Giusto, Head of Retail of GNV, and the following day transferred to Tangier Med, which it started connecting to Spain and France.[14][15][16][17][18][19]
