Gadget is South Africa's longest running technology news website..[1], which was started in 1998 by its current editor-in-chief Arthur Goldstuck.

The website covers a broad range of business and consumer technology, mainly covering IT news in South African and other notable technology events across the continent.

Introduction and Background[edit]

Gadget is considered as a leading IT news publication in South Africa, because of its leadership by Goldstuck. It covers ICT industry news, with a strong focus on providing industry context for the country. Alongside this, it also hosts reviews of consumer technology which focus on the positives and negatives of the latest technology available in South Africa.

Sections of the website[edit]

Gadget publishes at least five stories a day: three in its Featured section, and two in its Picture This section. The Picture This section holds three slots:

  • Product of the Day is updated every day with a notable product in the tech news space.
  • Stream of the Day is updated every day with a notable media source in the South African space, which could be a video or audio stream.
  • Movie of the Week is updated every Friday with a notable movie, either released in cinemas or via a popular streaming platform.

Involvement with NFTs[edit]

In April 2021, Gadget launched an NFT of the first article it published[2][3], A New Dimension in Golf[4]

“The purpose of the Gadget1998 NFT was to provide a use case that would be easy to understand and therefore serve an educational role, in providing better understanding of both the role and mechanism of NFTs. At the same time, we saw it as an ideal opportunity to raise funds for a charity that is close to our hearts, the South African National Council for the Blind,” said Goldstuck in an interview with Innovation Village[5]
