Game Power 7 is the first Arab company specializing in publishing and localizing online games. It was established in Dubai in 2007. The company released its first game, “Arabic Rappelz”, in 2008. This game was adapted in terms of text and content to suit Arab culture. Later, the company’s product list gradually increased with more worldwide games; each with its own different versions.[2] Game Power 7 has published eight products, most of them PC games. The company successfully applied translation and localization operations to suit Arab society and respect different players’ interests and play styles. After a few years of its foundation, the number of registered users exceeded 1 million players, with 50 volunteers in more than 22 countries around the world. Game Power 7 has a Content Control department that monitors its products, alongside a Quality Assurance department which regularly supervises customer care services and conducts research on gameplay types.[3] The company has cooperated over the years with many international partners, such as Gamigo AG, Gala Lab, Siamgame, mail.ru, and others.
Company's history
Game Power 7 was established in 2007 as a subsidiary of Spacetoon Media Group, which broadcasts children's programs. One year after its foundation, the company released its first game, “Arabic Rappelz”, which was localized and adapted to suit Arab culture. Its huge success in record time was due to meeting Arab players’ expectations.[4] With the growing popularity of online games locally and internationally, GP7 constantly expanded its business, offering different games targeting all age groups to professionally meet the Arab community’s needs. In 2009, Game Power 7 launched its first Arabic anime-themed game, “ASDA Story”, which became widely popular among players, followed by the soccer game “X-Kick”. Later, the company released two browser games, “Ministry of War” in 2010 and “Cultures” in 2011. Five years after its foundation, Game Power 7 published “Allods”, which was considered one of the strongest competitors to “World of Warcraft”, and the most popular game in the Arab community.[5] Meanwhile, the company announced its preparations for the first Arabic FPS game, “Adrenaline”, which includes maps from Arab countries, such as the Pyramids in Egypt and Old Damascus in Syria. It also features in-game Arabic commentary with different regional accents. The company won the “Best Localization in a Game” award at the annual T-break Awards in 2013 in MENA. That year, its staff exceeded 100 employees and included about 50 volunteers. In 2014, Game Power 7 launched a new anime game, “Arafiesta”, an Arabic version of the original game “Fiesta Online”, developed by the German company Gamigo.[6] In 2015, the number of products reached seven PC games, varying between action, strategy, and other genres, along with more than 12 different versions of these games. The company also organized the “Life game”, a real-life event in Arab countries that merged the virtual and real worlds. [7] In 2016, Game Power 7 underwent carefully planned administrative changes over a year. These changes included appointing Mr. Omar Al Shalak as CEO, succeeding Mr. Fadi Mujahid.[8] The company’s main strategy in 2016 was to focus on revitalizing its different games and implementing the fun element through a series of entertaining events, such as the Game Power 7 Carnival,[9] and the Rappelz Masters Tournament, a virtual Arab competition gathering players worldwide. Participants could win in-game premium items and a cash prize of up to 20,000 AED.[10] Game Power 7 also revealed its intention to publish the first Arabic mobile game in 2016–2017. Besides virtual events, GP7 organizes an annual series of field activities in various Arab countries, such as Algeria, Morocco, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Abu Dhabi (UAE), and Syria. The company also participated as an ambassador for Arabic online games in many worldwide technology and e-games events and conferences, such as the MENA games exhibition held in Beirut in 2015.[11]
Company’s games
Arabic Rappelz
Arabic Rappelz, or Hope of Nations, is the first Arabic Online Role-Playing Game targeting all age categories. It gathers Arab players within a virtual community. The story revolves around an imaginary world controlled by three nations: Deva, Asura, and Gaia, who help each other to thrive.[12] The original version of Arabic Rappelz was launched in 2006, while Game Power 7 acquired its localization and publishing rights in 2008 and published it under the new name, Hope of Nations. The Localization department adjusted the game’s texts and story, while the Design department modified its costumes and appearance to suit Arab traditions and customs. The game’s genre is MMORPG and is considered the most widespread in the Arab world after releasing more than 12 different expansions and versions (epics). Due to its large number of users, Arabic Rappelz won the “Most Popular Game Among Arab Players” award in 2013.[13] Players can choose male or female characters to represent them in the virtual world. Then, they choose outfits and weapons to engage in solo duels or join parties to run multiple quests. Players can also benefit from in-game events and activities to improve their characters’ performance and get new equipment to help them conquer this virtual world and its legendary monsters.
Adrenaline
Adrenaline is the first Arabic FPS 3D game. The story is based on a nuclear war and conflicts among the world’s nations, causing the planet’s destruction and imposing a new type of life. The last glimmer of hope lies in the Arctic treaty, aimed at saving what remains of the human race with the great decline of resources. After years of cold war and relative calm, a new energy source is discovered, leading to a new devastating war.[14] Adrenaline is characterized by Arabic commentary with a variety of regional accents. It also features many maps from famous sites in Arab countries, such as “Old Damascus” and the “Egyptian Pyramids”, in addition to fictional ones like “Industrial City” and “Sector 7”.[15] The game simulates reality regarding in-game weapons, such as the AK-47, in addition to many fictional, highly advanced arms. Moreover, Adrenaline contains several playing modes, such as Invasion and Deathmatch modes.
Arafiesta
Arafiesta is an Arabic Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) set on a fantasy planet ruled by a just and powerful king, respected and beloved by his people. However, peace does not last; the king is murdered by the greed and jealousy of others. This tragedy unites the kingdom’s heroes, who take an oath to face evil and fight aggressive monsters to restore peace and safety.[16] There are five available classes players can choose from. Each class has its own unique skills and attributes; players can promote their classes three times by completing challenging quests. One of the game’s special features is the “Friendship system,” where a player chooses a loyal partner. This system grants both bonus stats when adventuring together. Arafiesta also has special PVP arenas allowing players to challenge each other and gain better combat experience. During CBT, the game underwent testing by a limited number of players. Later, more users could join the testing phase during OBT, until it was officially released to all Arab players.[17]
