Madam Garsa Fwip, or simply Madam Garsa, is a fictional character in the Disney+ Star Wars television series The Book of Boba Fett. A Twi'lek cantina owner, she is introduced in the 2021 series premiere "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land". Appearing in four scenes across four episodes overall, she brings her tribute and loyalty to Boba Fett following the death of Jabba the Hutt, which he refuses, fails to calm down gladiator Black Krrsantan when he fights in her cantina, before being killed in the 2022 penultimate episode "Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger" when her cantina is blown up by the Pykes.
Madam Garsa is portrayed by Jennifer Beals, who also co-designed the character with costume designer Shawna Trpcic. Madam Garsa has received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with her limited role criticised as a "cameo".[1]
Appearances
In "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land", Madam Garsa Fwip is introduced as the Twi'lek owner of the cantina The Sanctuary in Mos Espa on Tatooine.[2] When Boba Fett becomes the planet's new Daimyo, he and his partner Fennec Shand visit The Sanctuary, where Madam Garsa has two of her servants fill Fett's with coins as "tribute" (bribery), which he refuses to accept. In this episode, Madam Garsa appears in one scene.
In "Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine", when the Hutt Twins arrive on Tatooine, Madam Garsa explains to a visiting Fett and Shand that the Twins are Jabba the Hutt's cousins, and seek to take back his land from Fett.[3] In this episode, Madam Garsa appears in one scene.
In "Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm", the Hutt Twins' former bodyguard Black Krrsantan gets into a bar fight in the Sanctuary, ripping off a slaver's arm after Madam Garsa fails to calm him down, before paying her for the damages.[4][5] In this episode, Madam Garsa appears in one scene.
Madam Garsa last appears in "Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger" in a silent role, as a duo of Pykes leave a container behind in her cantina, and it blows up, killing her and destroying her cantina.[6]
Characteristics
Madam Garsa Fwip is a tan-skinned Twi'lek, humanoids with two lekku (tentacular-like tails) on the back of their heads. Unlike most slave Twi'leks of Tatooine, Madam Garsa is a wealthy cantina owner.[7] The character's actress, Jennifer Beals, stated that "I mean, Madam Garsa is extraordinary. She is not like any other Twi'lek we've seen. She's enormously wealthy. And the costumes are extraordinary... it's clear that she's no one's slave and that she's no one's master. That is why she's a madam... They have actual plants on a planet where water comes at a premium. That's how wealthy she is."[8]
Development
Portrayal

Madam Garsa Fwip is portrayed by Jennifer Beals, who previously worked with series creator Jon Favreau in Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, and episode director Robert Rodriguez in Four Rooms. On being told by her agent that Favreau had offered her a Star Wars role, Beals video chatted with Rodriguez and Dave Filoni, who explained her character to her,[9] Beals and Rodriguez comparing her to Rick Blaine from the film Casablanca.[8]
On getting the part, believing the role was for The Mandalorian, Beals stated that she binge-watched The Mandalorian to prepare for the role.[10] only learning the series wasn't The Mandalorian but another Star Wars series after arriving on-set.[11][12] Madam Garsa was originally scripted as being called "Master Garsa", which Beals asked to be changed to "Madam" as the character tries to create a "literal sanctuary of beauty and balance in a world that’s lacking both".[9][13]
Costume
Beals collaborated with The Book of Boba Fett costume designer Shawna Trpcic in designing Madam Garsa's costume;[8] in order to imply Madam Garsa had seen combat, Beals suggested the character have a thin scar going from her collarbone to her sternum.[9] One of Madam Garsa's costumes was designed as a version of a cat eye, which Beals called a nod to a "recognizable sign of beauty, status, health, and makeup".[14] based off of Egyptian lineage.[14]
Madam Garsa's lekku were made by Brian Sipe and Alexei Dmitriew, who made them fit-to by Beals' head by measuring it to see where the most weight would be and how it would affect her spine, taking pictures of her and making a 3-D rendition of the lekku on a computer.[14] Makeup artist Alexy Jukic-Prévost made stencils for the character's eye makeup to apply after each episode.[9]
Reception
Madam Garsa Fwip has been received a mixed reception by critics, her minor role in the series being criticised. Screen Rant ranked her the 10th best supporting character in The Book of Boba Fett.[15] /Film has put her at the 10th best character in the series, stating, "Jennifer Beals was sadly not given that much to do with her Twi'lek nightclub owner, but what we get of her was promising."[16] Hannah Flint, writer at IGN, was disappointed in Beals' casting as what ultimately proved to be a minor character and "cameo", writing that it "amounts to nothing".[1]
