Gary Loyd Stewart

Gary Loyd Stewart (born February 12, 1963) published his memoir,[1] The Most Dangerous Animal Of All…Searching for my Father…and Finding the Zodiac Killer, which appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for e-book, non-fiction on July 31, 2014.[2]

Stewart was born Earl Van Dorne Best on February 12, 1963 at Southern Baptist Hospital (now Ochsner Baptist Medical Center) in New Orleans, LA, the illegitimate son of fugitives from San Francisco, California, Judith Chandler and Earl Van Best, Jr.[3][4][5]

Earl Van Best, Jr., and then 13 year old Judith "Judy" Chandler eloped to Reno, Nevada, and were married on January 5, 1961. The marriage annulled on February 14, 1962 and Best was arrested for statutory rape.[5] Judith later ran away to meet Best. They went to Mexico City and Acapulco, Mexico, where Judith became pregnant.[5] On April 19, 1963, Best and Chandler were apprehended and admitted to abandoning the baby and were extradited back to San Francisco.[6] On May 17, 1963, Earl Van Dorne Best was placed in the Harry Loyd and Leona Ortis Stewart as a candidate for adoption. That adoption would become official on January 21, 1964. Harry Loyd and Leona Stewart named their son Gary Loyd Stewart.
