Gary Wien is an American music journalist from Belmar, New Jersey and author of Beyond the Palace and Are You Listening?.
Personal life[edit]
Wein grew up in Lincroft, New Jersey and regularly visited Asbury Park with his family. In an interview with Jersey Beat, Wien recalls the trips were "something of a Utopian paradise for me[,] I played skeeball, video games, and rode the rides as much as I could."[1] In 2004, Wein, along with Carrie Potter and David Mieras, attempted to transform the recently closed Upstage building into a rock and roll museum.[2]
Work[edit]
Beyond the Palace is the first comprehensive look at the Asbury Park rock and roll scene, which launched the careers of such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, and Bon Jovi.[1] Are You Listening? is Wien's list of the top 100 albums of the decade, which was compiled from a six-month review of over 2,220 releases.[3][4]
Wien is a three-time winner of the Asbury Music Award for Top Music Journalist, and is the founder and publisher of Upstage which won an Asbury Music Award for Top Music Publication, becoming the first publication to ever beat The Aquarian Weekly.[5][6] Wien has written for several publications, including Princeton Magazine, Backstreets, Upstage, and a chapter in Debra L. Rothenberg's book Bruce Springsteen In Focus 1980-2012.[1] He currently writes for NewJerseyStage.com and Jersey Arts, and runs the online radio station ThePenguinRocks.com. In July 2014, he launched a monthly interactive magazine called New Jersey Stage.
