Gasthaus Gutenberger

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gasthaus Gutenberger was a German restaurant in the St. James neighborhood of Winnipeg.[1] from 1995 to 2016.

Gasthaus Gutenberger was founded by Kurt Wagner, a native of Laubach in Germany. Wagner had begun as an apprentice chef at age 14, later cooking on merchant marine ships and then attaining the level of Master Chef while serving in the German Army. He then opened his first restaurant, Kurt's Schnitzel House, in Wawanesa, Manitoba. In 1995 he sold that and opened Gasthaus Gutenberger ("Gutenberger Restaurant"; Gutenberger is a family name).[2]

The restaurant featured German-style decor – dark wood paneling, stipple, and steins simulating the look of a Bavariam chalet. It served a wide selection of German food[3] (such as bratwurst, schnitzel, and spätzle) with family-style service. A roaming lederhosen-garbed accordionist played German favorites.[2][1] A buffet was offered at lunch.[4][3][5] Aside from the restaurant at the German Society of Winnipeg building on Charles Street, it was Winnipeg's only German restaurant.[citation needed]

Jereme Labelle worked his way up from trainee cook to head chef at the restaurant, and Wagner retired and sold Gasthaus Gutenberger to him in July 2012.[2][6] Gasthaus Gutenberger closed unexpectedly in June 2016 with no notice or explanation, causing some comment and consternation.[7]
