Yushau Ogirima Adozuka, professionally known as Gbono, is a Nigerian Afrobeats and Afro-fusion singer, songwriter, record producer, and creative entrepreneur. Originally from Okene in Kogi State, he blends Afrobeats with pop, hip hop, Fuji, Juju, R&B, and global influences to create a sound described as genre-bending and purpose-driven.[1] Gbono is best known for his 2025 debut extended play (EP), Maybe A Little Longer, which features the viral single "Mezebu" and thematically explores resilience, survival, and self-discovery.[2]
He is recognized for introspective storytelling, socially conscious lyrics, a groovy and diverse sound, and thematic depth.[3]
Early life and background
Yushau Ogirima Adozuka was born in Okene, Kogi State, Nigeria.[4] His earliest musical influences included Fuji and Juju tapes played by his mother, and hip hop classics introduced by his uncle.[4] He began recording music while studying in Zaria around 2005 under the name Big Brains, releasing early projects before relocating to pursue music more seriously.[5]
In 2012, the death of his mother marked a profound turning point, fueling his resolve to carry her legacy forward through unwavering perseverance.[4] Between 2015 and 2020, Gbono faced periods of depression and setbacks tied to the challenges of pursuing his dreams, which shaped the reflective songwriting in his later work.[5] The name "Gbono" (meaning "hot" in Yoruba) came from a clothing line he ran in school, which friends eventually adopted as his nickname. When he relaunched, it felt natural to reclaim the name for a renewed identity and mission.[5]
Career
2005–2013: Early work and Big Brains era
Gbono's first recording experiences began around 2005 in Zaria, performing as Big Brains.[5] During that period, he created songs and performed locally, blending hip hop and Afrobeats. After moving to Lagos in 2011, he released a handful of singles and worked on an unreleased mixtape before stepping away from performing in 2014.[4]
2023–2025: Return and Maybe A Little Longer
After nearly a decade away, Gbono returned to music in 2023 with sharpened focus. In 2025, he released Maybe A Little Longer through Headline Music.[3] The five-track EP includes "6,6," "Far & Wide," "Nigerian," "Mezebu," and "Tonight," each telling a different piece of his story.[6]
"6,6" serves as a prayerful, gospel-inspired opener built around violin and spiritual harmonies.[7] "Far & Wide" captures sacrifices and migration dreams, layered with country-inflected guitar.[7] "Nigerian" is a protest song inspired by personal hardship, sampling Senator Natasha Akpoti's voice, written while stuck in traffic, broke, and technically homeless.[4]
"Mezebu" is a lighter, flirtatious mid-tempo track that has gone viral on TikTok, sparking the #MezebuMove challenge.[8] "Tonight" closes the project on a celebratory note, blending hip hop–style synths with Afrobeats rhythms.[7]
The rollout faced challenges including hacking of his X account and Spotify takedowns, but Gbono rebuilt momentum through visuals, website engagement, and TikTok strategy.[2] Critics described the project as confident, genre-bending, and culturally rooted.[6]
Artistry
Gbono's style merges Afrobeats, Afro-fusion, Fuji, Juju, hip hop, R&B, and reggae influences. He describes Afrobeats as giving him the "widest playground for expression," enabling him to rap, sing, chant, or harmonize in multiple languages (such as Yoruba, Igbo, and English) while remaining true to his Nigerian identity.[4]
His lyrics explore:
- resilience and perseverance (6,6, Far & Wide)
- hustle and dream chasing (Far & Wide)
- faith and hope (6,6, Tonight)
- social commentary (Nigerian)
- flirtatious romance (Mezebu)
He views vulnerability as a kind of rhythm that gives weight and honesty to his sound.[5] His visuals and live sets are known for purpose and stillness rather than trends, extending the message beyond just music.[5]
Entrepreneurship
Gbono operates under Headline Music, the independent imprint he founded to support emerging artists and deliver quality music with authenticity and artistic integrity.[8][5]
