Gemmy Industries (\ˈjem-ē\) is an American novelty manufacturing company, best known for its animatronic and inflatable characters. It is currently headquartered in Coppell, Texas, a suburb of Dallas-Fort Worth. During the 2000s, it became one of the world's leading animatronic toy manufacturers.[1][2][3]
History[edit]
Founded in 1984, the company originally began producing ballpoint pens.[4] Gemmy would eventually begin to venture into novelty manufacturing, and in 2000, the company would achieve its first mainstream success with its Big Mouth Billy Bass - a sound and motion activated talking fish on a trophy plaque. From here, the company began predominately making animatronic figures, especially for the Christmas and Halloween seasons, as well as licensing music icons and singing hamsters.[5] The company also began distributing internationally, especially to the United Kingdom.
In 2007 and 2009, two of Gemmy's biggest customers, the Eckerd Corporation and KB Toys went out of business, the demand for animatronic toys fell, and the company turned its direction to creating its Airblown Inflatable and LightShow brands for holiday and seasonal decorating.[6] The company still manufactures some animatronic goods, mainly for The Home Depot.[7]
In media[edit]
Gemmy's products appeared in Designing Spaces,[8] The Sopranos[9] and The Walking Dead[10] Its Disney-licensed products were featured in a Christmas decoration roundup.[11]
Varidesk[edit]
In 2013, Gemmy helped found Varidesk, which produces adjustable desks and office furniture. In 2017, Varidesk was recognized as EY Entrepreneur Of The Year in the Emerging category for the U.S.[12]
