Generator is the second studio EP from the American rock band the Clydes.

Content[edit]

The six-track alternative rock EP was self-released, on 9 December 2013. It was recorded, engineered, mixed and produced by Barry Knob at Retro City Studios in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and mastered by James Dellatacoma at Creative Music and Audio in West Orange, New Jersey. Album photography and cover design is by Bill Bodkin, with additional design by Kelly Barratt. The album contains classic power pop, dark psychedelia, and slick production, and it draws comparison to the music of the Beatles, the Smiths, and Elvis Costello, and the Matthew Sweet album, Girlfriend.[1][2] The song "Marigold" makes reference to the Velvet Underground song "All Tomorrow's Parties," and science-fiction writer William Gibson.[1]

Reception[edit]

A review by Jersey Beat says that the Clydes "utilize a formula that easily could have found them on the Dromedary Records roster back in the Nineties: a strong vocalist with emotive vocals, dramatic melodies that incorporate familiar pop tropes, solid musicianship up and down the lineup, and engaging, enigmatic lyrics."[2] Speak Into My Good Eye editor Mike Mehalick notes that Generator "manages to capture the band's live prowess and power paired with the dressings of some more than interesting studio elements. The warmth in tone, often drifting into the psychedelic, strikes from the outset even alongside the Clydes' predilection for more hard charged, arena rock riffing." He describes the opener "The Fate of California" as "intertwining guitar passages, skyward reaching harmonies, and Brent Johnson's steadied, yet far reaching delivery."[3]
