Geoffrey Newland is a Scottish actor from Hawick, best known as Doctor Handley in Coronation Street, Capaldi in Da Vinci's Demons and Lillington in Outlander.[1]
Career[edit]
Newland has made over 30 film and television appearances and has been described as a “soap legend” [2]. In 2022 he plays PI Woodruff in Flowers In The Attic: Origin,[3] Doctor Handley as a recurring role in Coronation Street (2022),[4] Lester Garrick in Father Brown (2023), Grant Thomas in Casualty (2022), and is series regular James Darrow in BBC production A Kind of Spark (2023).
Newland has appeared in a number of feature films including Thomas Vinterberg's Kursk, Elbert Van Strien's Marionette and Nigel Cole's The Wedding Video.
He is a voice actor who voices commercials, audio books, animations, B2B explainers, corporate films, e-learning projects and narrations.
He stars in Doctor Who for Big Finish, and is a member of The Talking Books panel for the RNIB and Story Nory panel.[citation needed]
Personal life[edit]
Newland grew up in Hawick, Scotland. He boarded at Saint Mary's Melrose, Mowden Hall School and Sedbergh School before studying law and becoming one of the first 10 people in the world to qualify as a barrister combining a law degree with a barrister's vocational course in Newcastle.[citation needed]
He travelled the world for over two years before following his dream of becoming an actor, studying at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Lee Strasberg (New York).[5]
He plays both the piano and the guitar.
Newland has been married since 2008, is a father of three and resides in Kentish Town, London.
