Georgia Plessas (born 2 October 1998) is an Australian soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Western Sydney Wanderers in the W-League and for the Australia women's national under-20 soccer team.[1] She previously played for Sydney FC where she made her W-League debut at the age of 15. She made her international debut at the 2016 AFF Women's Championship.

Early life[edit]

Plessas was born on 2 October 1988 and grew up in Carlton, a suburb of Sydney, and attended Endeavour Sports High School.[2] She played junior football for the Sutherland Sharks.[3]

In July 2012 Plessas was selected for the NSW Metro team that participated at the under-14 national championships. Her performance at the tournament, including a hat trick of goals in the final match,[4] helped lead her team to win the championship and earned Plessas selection in the tournament's All-Star team.[5] Her performance at the tournament was rewarded with selection to the national under-17 squad later the same month.[6] At the end of 2012 Plessas was selected for the under-15 New South Wales state representative squad.[3]

Career[edit]

Club[edit]

Plessas made her W-League debut at the age of 15[2] playing for Sydney FC. In her first match, she entered as a substitute in the second half of a 1–1 draw against the Brisbane Roar.[7] Plessas made a second appearance as a substitute a week later in a 0–3 loss to Canberra United.[8] Sydney finished in fourth place during the regular season with a 5–4–3 record securing a berth to the playoffs where they were defeated 3–0 by Perth Glory in the semi-finals.[9]

Plessas signed with Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2016–17 season.[1] She made her debut for the club on 13 November 2016,[10] coming on as a substitute at half time in a 2–0 loss to her former team Sydney FC.[11] The following weekend she made her first appearance in the starting 11 of a W-League match, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 win over Adelaide United.[12] She made a further two appearances as a substitute during the season, as the Wanderers finished second to last in the 9-team competition.[13] The Wanderers finished in eighth place during the regular season with a 4–7–1 record.[14]

International[edit]

Plessas first trained with a national side when she was selected to the national under-17 squad in July 2012[6] for the November 2012 qualifying round of the 2013 AFC U-16 Women's Championship.

In August 2015 Plessas was selected for the national under-20 team that competed at the 2015 AFC U-19 Women's Championship held in China.[15] She made one appearance in the tournament, coming on as a substitute in Australia's first match, a 0-2 loss to Japan.[16]

In July 2016, Plessas was again selected for the national under-20 team that competed at the 2016 AFF Women's Championship held in Myanmar. Plessas started in three matches at the tournament,[17][18][19] scoring the equalizer in a 1–1 draw against the host nation during the round robin stage.[20]

In November 2016, Plessas was part of the squad for the 2017 AFC U-19 Women's Championship qualification tournament held in China.[21] She started both matches and scored a goal against the Northern Mariana Islands,[22][23] helping Australia qualify for the August 2017 AFC U-19 Women's Championship.[24]
