German Kraft Brewing Limited (trading as German Kraft Brewery) is a London-based brewery and hospitality operator, known for brewing and serving unfiltered beer "tank-fresh" within food hall venues such as Mercato Metropolitano (Elephant and Castle) and Mercato Mayfair.[1]
History
German Kraft began trading at Mercato Metropolitano, Elephant and Castle, in 2017, serving unfiltered lager and wheat beer directly from on-site tanks.[2]
In February 2020, the company opened a second London operation at Mercato Mayfair, installing a small brewhouse in the crypt of St Mark's; this was noted by CAMRA's London Drinker newsletter.[3]
A 2025 feature in Pellicle described the expansion of the Elephant and Castle brewhouse and the company's growth ambitions in London and Europe.[1]
Operations and venues
The company emphasises on-site brewing and tank-to-tap service within multi-vendor food-hall markets. In 2021, City A.M. included German Kraft among notable outdoor drinking destinations at Mercato Metropolitano.[4]
At Mercato Mayfair, German Kraft operates a bar in the nave and a microbrewery in the crypt.[3]
Beers
German Kraft specialises in traditional, unfiltered German-style lagers served directly from conditioning tanks behind the bar. The brewery follows the principles of the Reinheitsgebot, using malt, hops, water and yeast without finings, pasteurisation or filtration.[1]
Pellicle attributes the approach to Franconian beer culture, particularly the practice of drinking beer "from the tank" in and around Erlangen, Bavaria, which co-founder Felix Bollen sought to replicate in London.[1]
The brewery's core range includes:
- Heidi – an unfiltered Helles-style pale lager around 5.2% ABV, with a soft malt body and balanced bitterness.[1]
- Lotte – a Bavarian-style wheat beer with banana and clove notes from traditional top-fermenting yeast.[2]
- Heinrich – an amber unfiltered lager with toasted malt notes and a slightly firmer hop profile.[1]
Reception
Time Out described the brewery's in-situ model as distinctive, and City A.M. has included the site in round-ups of outdoor places to drink.[2][4]
Future of Elephant and Castle site
In March 2025, the Evening Standard reported that the Borough Triangle redevelopment had been approved and that Mercato Metropolitano's current site is slated for demolition. Southwark News quoted German Kraft co-founder Andrea Ferrario in coverage of the decision.[5][6]
Jim and Tonic
German Kraft Brewing is reportedly the majority owner (51%) of Jim & Tonic, an East London business specialising in bars and event hire services; this claim is based on the company's own LinkedIn page and has not been independently verified.[7]
Jim & Tonic began in 2016 as a mobile gin van and has since expanded to permanent venues and event operations, offering mobile bars and pop-ups for large public events.[8]
