Getmii is a location-based social media application created by Max Meyer, Darryl Lau and Matthias Juergens.[1][2][3] Using the application, users broadcast posts to other users nearby who can see and respond. A response enters both users into a private chat, wherein users can share location and contact information. Each post lasts on the app for a limited time, after which Getmii claims it will be deleted from the company's servers. The app is available for download on iOS and Android.[4][5][3]
History[edit]
In early 2015, the founders were in Bangkok, Thailand developing a logistics application. Inspired in part by the April 2015 Nepal Earthquake, they expanded the platform beyond logistics to allow posts of all kinds, including emergency disaster relief.[1][3] Getmii CTO Juergens led product development which took place over 2.5 months in Bangkok, Thailand. Getmii held its first pilot test with the Red Cross Central Donation Center in Nepal on September 10, 2015, before launching globally on Thursday, September 24, 2015.[1][3]
Features[edit]
Need Feed[edit]
The Getmii "Need Feed" displays a scrollable list of needs in the user's location. Users see their proximity to, the number of mutual friends with (unless the poster is anonymous), and the Facebook profile picture of each poster. The "Need Feed" serves as the application's home screen and changes constantly as posts expire and new ones are added.[6][7][8][9]
Glory[edit]
Active users earn "Glory," which is measured by a numerical value in multiples of five. The points currently have no meaning beyond gamification.[8] Users earn "Glory" through the following actions:[10]
Opening a post — 5
Sharing a post — 5
Posting a need — 10
Anonymous Posting[edit]
Users can choose to post their needs and respond to others' needs anonymously. This action removes the user's name, picture and mutual friends from his or her post. The same guidelines apply to responding anonymously to a post. An anonymous poster retains anonymity within the private chat.[10][11] The feature is similar to anonymous posting app Yik Yak.[12]
Private Chat[edit]
After a user clicks "I'm interested" on any need, he or she enters into a private chat with the poster. From here, user can share contact information, chat for fun and share location.[13]
Location Sharing[edit]
Because many needs require some level of face-to-face interaction, Getmii allows users to share location from within its private chat feature.[11]
Facebook Login[edit]
As two major concerns with transactions are credibility and quality assurance, the application requires users to login with an active Facebook account.[8] The application automatically pulls the users first name and profile picture from Facebook.[14]
