GhKings, LLC is a multipurpose company which deals with media productions, content distribution and specializing in internet-related services and products.[1]
The website which started as an online portal for promoting Ghanaian music only has sprung into Ghana's first online digital marketplace to distribute music across mobile platforms[2] like MTN, Vodafone, Tigo, Airtel and Glo in Ghana.
With time, the small project has eventually turned into one of 2016's promising startups in Ghana; innovating and developing new ways to support the Ghana music industry.
History[edit]
GhKings was founded in 2010 in Accra, Ghana by Kingsley Osei Bonsu; a filmmaker[3] and an online entrepreneur. The idea was born out during his work experience as a creative director at Ohenemedia, a renowned media production house in Accra.
The platform was therefore initially built to just promote Ghana music across the country and beyond.
The website which became number one for celebrities across Africa received several audiovisual endorsements from celebrities like VIP (music group),[4] Reggie Rockstone (curator of Hiplife genre),[5] Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (Nigerian actress),[6] Wanlov The Kubolor (Musician),[7] Deloris "Delay" Frimpong Manso (Broadcaster),[8] Kwaw Kese,[9] Funny Face (Comedian)[10] and a host of others; has now become more than what it was initially – now paying revenues to music owners.
In 2012, Kingsley also became the first manager in Ghana for YouTube's content management partnership with Ohenemedia until 2016 when he finally became a merchant-partner with SMSGH to develop Ghana's first and successful online music store.
GhKings Store[edit]
In March 2016, GhKings announced the first-of-its-kind initiative as the first and practical system which Ghanaians were once familiar with, and enabled them to purchase music with the various mobile money wallets.[11][12][13][14]
Since the assimilation of internet in Africa especially Ghana,[15] musicians have sought for a convenient way to make their music available to listeners and buyers alike.
GhKings Store; Ghana (GH)[16] and International (INT)[17] - was therefore established prior to the demand by the musicians who wanted a reliable and accessible channel to distribute and generate revenues for their music.[18][19]
With the system, users are able to shop their favourite music on-the-go with their regular mobile payment systems, debit card or credit card, mPower account, Paypal and more.
The company which started rolling out its service announced Joey B, songwriter and brand ambassador for Adidas (Ghana) as the first recording artiste to distribute his music.[20][21][22]
On June 3, 2016, Hit 103.9 FM,[23] a radio station in Accra over the phone, interviewed the founder and commended him for such a brilliant initiative.[24]
