Giacomo Molinari (in Arabic: موليناري جياكومو), also known as Giacomo Ahmed Molinari,[1] was an Italian architect and astronomer born on August 24, 1814, in Cavagnano, in the province of Verceil, Italy. He is known for his contributions to the reconstruction of Laghouat, Algeria, after its conquest by the French army. His story is marked by his adoption of Islam and his influence on Algerian architecture.

Biography[edit]

Conquest of Algeria and work in Laghouat[edit]

Molinari arrived in Laghouat in 1855 at the age of 39, three years after the city was taken by the French army. Molinari was nicknamed Mouninar by the local Laghouatis. He was part of a group of Italian architects and masons who came to rebuild the city. Among his accomplishments are the Fort Bouscaren, the Bessières barracks, the Saint-Hilarion church, and the Essaffah Mosque.[2] He also built the old mosques of Djelfa and Aflou, as well as several works in Algiers and Miliana.
