Gillanders Arbuthnot and Company, Limited, often simply called Gillanders Arbuthnot was an Agency House in British India founded by traders and merchants from Scotland. Gillanders Arbuthnot has made several pioneering contributions to the economy of India, such as the construction of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.[1]

Background[edit]
The company was founded by F. M. Gillanders at Lyons Range, Calcutta in 1820.[2] He was joined by John Ogilvy in 1824 and the initial name of the company was the Gillanders, Ogilvy and Company.In 1833 Ogilvy retired and was replaced by another partner named Arbuthnot as a result of which, the company became known as Gillanders, Arbuthnot & Co.[2]

The company was initially a tea trading company and made huge profits. The company got merged and acquired several times in its history. The company is currently owned by the Kothari Group of Companies.[3]
The company was re-incorporated under the Indian company law on 01 February 1935 and was registered with the Registrar of Companies, Kolkata.[4][3]
The company is currently headquartered at C4, Gillander House, Netaji Subhas Road, Calcutta, West Bengal.[5]
