ginlo is a privacy-focused end-to-end encrypted instant messaging application initially developed for iOS and Android, available to both individuals and businesses. After a period of downtime in late 2019 owing to the insolvancy of the previous owner, ginlo has been fully available since February 2020 and is being actively developed and maintained by the newly founded ginlo.net GmbH. During Spring 2020 the corporate version of the application also became available to download and use on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

In January 2021, owing to the controversy surrounding privacy changes on the WhatsApp messenging service, services like ginlo and Threema saw a rise in notability and downloads.

    History[edit]

    Brabbler AG[edit]

ginlo, an anagram of 'login', entered the beta phase for private users in 2017. ginlo was developed by Brabbler Secure Message and Data Exchange AG, which was founded in 2015 by GMX Mail founders Karsten Schramm, Eric Dolatre and Peter Köhnkow, together with Jörg Sellmann.

In January 2018, a paid version for businesses was released under the name ginlo @work (later ginlo Business).

    Takeover of SIMSme[edit]

On 13 March 2019, it was announced that Brabbler AG would acquire Deutsche Post AG's competitor SIMSme. In the course of this, Deutsche Post would acquire a 10% stake in Brabbler AG. SIMSme was a cross-platform instant messaging service in 2014 which came in two versions: a free one for private users and a paid version for business users that refinanced the free service.

The SIMSme brand was transferred to the ginlo family of brands in June 2019.

    Insolvency and takeover[edit]

On 5 November, Brabbler AG announced that the service would be discontinued at the end of 2019 as no investor had been found. The Munich Local Court (Insolvency Court) opened insolvency proceedings against the company's assets and ordered self-administration in a decision dated 31 October 2019.

Since February 2020, ginlo Gesellschaft für Datenkommunikationsdienste mbH has been the operator of the service

    Encryption[edit]

    Local encryption[edit]

Local (or client-side) data, such as messages or contacts, are stored on the unit in an encrypted database. Each key is randomly generated and stored in a system-specific key ring.

    End-to-end encryption[edit]

All communication content exchanged with other ginlo or ginlo Business users is end-to-end encrypted. A protocol based on Libsodium is used to encrypt messages between users. Files are encoded using AES-256. This data is then encrypted using an asymmetric procedure. For this purpose, an asymmetric key pair based on Elliptic Curve Cryptography (Curve25519) is generated.
