Giuseppe Zocco is co-founder and partner at Index Ventures, a venture capital firm with offices in London, Geneva and San Francisco.[1][2] Companies Index Ventures has funded include Dropbox,[3] Facebook[4] and Skype,[4] and the firm's partners include Dick Costolo, the former CEO of Twitter.[5] The firm had $1.25 billion available for new investments as of February 2016.[6]
Early life and education[edit]
Zocco was born and raised in Italy. He received his bachelor of arts degree in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan and received a master of business administration degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business.[1][7][8][9][10]
Career[edit]
Prior to co-founding Index Ventures, Zocco was with the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.[11] In 1992, Zocco co-founded Index Ventures in Geneva with brothers Neil and David Rimer.[12][13] By 2011, the three of them had raised and invested approximately $2.3 billion.[14]
At Index Ventures, Zocco has been involved with investments in a number of different companies, including Ciao (acquired by Greenfield Online and subsequently by Microsoft for $486 million);[15] Milestone (acquired by Canon);[16] Micromet (acquired by Amgen for $1.16 billion);[17] Numerical Technologies (acquired by Synopsys for $250 million);[18] chipmaker Virata (which later entered into a $1.3 Billion merger with GlobeSpan);[19] and Zendesk (NYSE: ZEN).[11][20]
Zocco has served on the board of directors of several companies including:
- Moleskine (BIT: MSK), a manufacturer of luxury notebooks and other paper products.[10][21][21][22]
- Ozon.ru, the largest online retailer in Russia, known as the "Russian Amazon."[10][23][24]
- Privalia, an Italian e-commerce company which in April 2016 was sold to French e-commerce company Vente-Privee for $560 million.[25][10]
- RPX (Rational Patent Exchange) (NASDAQ: RPXC), which conducts patent risk management services for large technology companies such as Apple, Cisco Systems, Google, and IBM.[11][26][14]
Zocco was the subject of a 2011 profile in Venture Capital Journal, which stated, "Giuseppe Zocco is realizing his dream of helping to create a true multi-stage VC platform capable of supporting entrepreneurs from startup to industry leader."[10] In a 2012 "fireside chat" interview, Mike Butcher, Editor-at-large at TechCrunch, called Zocco "One of the key VCs in Europe."[27]
Non-profit involvement[edit]
Zocco serves on the board of directors of the Stanford University Alumni Association,[28] as a board member and President of the Stanford Club of Switzerland,[29] and on the Selection Committee of the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneers program.[29]
Personal life[edit]
Zocco lives with his wife and three sons in Geneva, Switzerland. His wife, Stephanie Rada Zocco, is founder and president of the Geneva Business Roundtable, a trade advisory group.[10][30][31]
