Glenn Blanco.
Glenn Blanco is a Filipino artist and the eldest of the Blanco siblings, born on February 19, 1962. He was named after an American astronaut John Glenn who made his first space flight that year. Glenn, as a painter, is in his element in nature scenes and landscapes. Being the first child of a well-known artist, Glenn’s artistic talent was continually challenged to meet the strict standards set by his father.
Early career
Glenn Blanco only started doing paintings during his fourth year in secondary education and later finished journalism in college. Glenn Blanco is a late bloomer unlike his siblings who started early, especially the youngest of the Blanco siblings, Peter Paul Blanco who started when he was 11 months old. He didn’t see any hindrance despite his situation; instead, he even mastered illustrating life-like images. His family has a museum located at Angono, Rizal, Philippines. His father, Jose Blanco also known as Pitok Bunggan, established it. Glenn also had an active hand preparing the Blanco book which was also launched in 1987 as he went to Hongkong to personally supervise its printing. While participating in the family exhibits, Glenn was also active in artistic activities outside the family.
Exhibitions
In 1986, he began joining group shows on his own such as the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) convention exhibit and the “Bagkus-Bugkos” exhibit at the Museum of Philippine Art. From 1987 on, Glenn became one of the most active young artists. Even as a college student, he participated in the Art Literati Exhibit at the University of Santo Tomas. In 1987, he participated in the “Pasinaya” group exhibit held at Malacañang Palace.
Personal life
His father, Jose Blanco “Pitok”, married Loreto Pitario Perez in 1961. They had seven children: Glenn was the eldest born in 1962, Noel Blanco born in 1964, Michael Blanco born in 1966, Joy P. Blanco born in 1968, Jan Blanco born in 1972, Gay born in 1974 and Peter Paul born in 1980. The year 1989 was a milestone in Glenn Blanco’s life. At 27, he married Gemma G. Yonzon, an artistically inclined student of architecture from Los Baños, Laguna. The following year, the couple was blessed with their first child, aptly named Sining, and the first grandchild of Pitok and Loring.
Education
In 1967, he entered San Clemente Kindergarten School and later finished his elementary schooling at Angono Private High School. After he graduated in 1978, he studied for a year in the United States under the Youth for Understanding (YFU) program. There he visited the art galleries and won first prize in a drawing competition at South California High School. He also graduated from Senior high 12th grade from Irmo High, Columbia, South California, USA. And he finished college at the University of Santo Tomas with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1987.
