Global Economic Prospects

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Global Economic Prospects (GEP) is a semi-annual report that examines global economic developments and prospects, with a special focus on emerging market and developing economies. Its forecasts for the world economy are frequently reported by major print and online media[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The report has been published since 1991 by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (or World Bank), and is one of the organization’s three flagship reports (see also World Development Report and Doing Business Report).

Economic Growth Forecasts[edit]

Twice each year the GEP publishes economic growth forecasts for the world economy, major economic regions, major developed countries, and over 100 emerging and developing economies. In June 2019, the report predicted global growth would slow to 2.6 percent, reflecting weaker-than-expected trade and investment at the start of the year. However, growth would gradually rise to 2.8 percent by 2021, predicated on continued benign global financing conditions and a modest recovery in emerging market and developing economies.

GEP -- June 2019[edit]

In addition to discussing global and regional economic developments and prospects, this edition, subtitled Heightened Tensions, Subdued Investment, includes analytical essays on the benefits and risks of government borrowing, recent investment weakness in emerging market and developing economies, the pass-through of currency depreciations to inflation, and the evolution of growth in low-income countries.

GEP -- January 2019[edit]

This edition, subtitled Darkening Skies, includes a chapter on the challenges posed by informality and associated policy options. The report also contains pieces on the decline in EMDE inflation over the past four to five decades, rising debt vulnerabilities in low-income countries, and the implications of large spikes in food prices for poverty.

GEP -- June 2018[edit]

This edition, subtitled The Turning of the Tide, includes two essays of critical importance for emerging and developing economies: an analysis of their increasing role in global commodity markets, and an assessment of their corporate debt burdens.

GEP -- January 2018[edit]

This edition, subtitled Broad-Based Upturn, but for How Long? includes a chapter on the causes of the broad-based slowdown in potential growth and suggests a number of remedies. It also contains sections of the impact of the 2014-16 oil price collapse and the relationship between education demographics and global inequality.

Pre-2018 reports[edit]

The report was published semi-annually beginning in January 2010. Prior to that, the report was published annually.[10]
