History[edit]

In ancient times, Gohana was known as Gavambhavana (गवंबहवनः - meaning “where cows are found in plenty”) and was considered a sacred place. Prithviraj Chauhan had constructed a fort here. After defeating Prithviraj in 1192, Muhammad Ghori destroyed the fort. Later, Gohana also became a settlement of Taga Brahmins. All Muslim families left this place in 1947 and migrated to Pakistan. Today, Gohana is inhibited by many Jat families of various gotras, including Malik gotra. Being a tehsil town, people from other communities also reside in the town.

Gohana's role in the Independence Movement of 1857[edit]
