Google has just announced..[1] its next search algorithm update named Helpful Content Update, also known as HCU. Although it is not a core update but according to Google it is going to be a major update to the Google algorithm that will prioritize helpful content in search results. The update had begun to rollout on August 25th 2022, and finished rolling out on September 9, 2022, 15 days later[2]. will have a significant impact on how content is ranked in Google search.

In the past, Google has relied heavily on keyword density to determine the relevancy of a piece of content. However, this has led to a lot of low-quality and spammy content ranking highly in search results. The Helpful Content Update will instead focus on the quality and usefulness of content, rather than just the keywords.

Google has said that the update will not penalize sites for having low-quality content, but it will make it harder for them to rank highly in search results. This means that sites with high-quality, helpful content will see a boost in their search rankings, while those with low-quality or spammy content will see a decline.

The Helpful Content Update is part of a larger trend at Google, which is moving away from keyword-based ranking and towards a more holistic approach that takes into account the quality and usefulness of content. This change is likely to have a major impact on the SEO industry, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the ranking of websites in the months and years to come.

After rolling out of this update Search Engine Round Table published a report on a recent poll where they showed that only 20% of SEOs noticed any positive or negative ranking changes, since the update[3]

Updates:[edit]

Google's HCU will place a greater emphasis on “people-first”[4] content. This means that content which is written in a more natural, human-friendly style will be given preference in the search results.

This is a significant update for Google, as it marks a shift away from the highly technical and keyword-focused approach that has been the cornerstone of its search algorithm for many years.

The update is designed to address the growing trend of “content farms”, which create large quantities of low-quality, keyword-stuffed articles in an attempt to game the system. Google has said that the new update will not impact on the ranking of individual pages, but will instead focus on the overall quality of a website’s content.

Sitewide Update:[edit]

Google's Helpful Content Update is a sitewide update[5], means if the algorithm finds a significant amount of the content of a website is unhelpful or unsatisfying the user intent then the whole site will be affected. Although Google hasn't said to penalize the site but it would definitely affect the site in case of ranking. Even after rolling out the update the algorithm will continuously detect unhelpful content, stated by Google in its original announcement[6]
