Gopika Poornima is an Indian singer who mostly sings for Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada language films.[2][1][3][4] She became popular with the singing competition Padutha Theeyaga. Her husband Mallikarjun is also a singer and composer in Telugu cinema.[5][6]

Personal life[edit]

Gopika was born in Vizianagaram and brought up in Hyderabad. She was trained as a classical singer.[7] Her father was a senior manager in a central government office in Hyderabad.[8] She participated in the first edition of singing reality show Padutha Theeyaga hosted by ETV. She was introduced to film music for this show. She met her future husband Mallikarjun in the same programme. After this programme, her father took voluntary retirement from his service and shifted to Chennai to train her on classical music, and seeking opportunities in Telugu films. Mallikarjun also went to Chennai with the advice of his friends to enter into films. They did stage shows together. Later they fell in love with each other and got married on February 10, 2008 in Simhachalam.[9]

Career[edit]

Gopika made her debut as a background singer in the film Singanna in 1997.[8] The music for this film was composed by Vandemataram Srinivas. He invited Gopika, and Mallikarjun to sing for a song in that film. Incidentally they recorded their first song in the same studio where S. P. Balasubrahmyanyam sang for the first time.

She along with Mallikarjun traveled to different countries like USA, New Zealand, Australia along with singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam.[9]

Awards[edit]

She got the television Nandi award for best female playback singer for the serial Priyanka in 2003.[10] She was also nominated for the best female playback singer for the song Lali Lali in the film Dhamarukam Filmfare south awards in 2013.[11][12]
