Gorgeous Gus
Gorgeous Gus was a British comic strip which appeared from 1950 on in the British comic book magazines The Wizard and Victor Book for Boys.[1] The artist was Bert Vandeput.[2][3]
Concept
Gorgeous Gus was a British aristocrat, the Earl of Boote, who was the owner of Redburn Rovers football club. He was nicknamed "Gorgeous Gus" by the fans because of his aristocratic airs and graces. For example, he would sit on the sidelines during games, attended to by his faithful butler Jenkins. As a goalkeeper his approach to the game relied on minimal but very effective expenditure of effort. Instead of leaping to save a high shot, he would turn to face his goal and wait for the ball to strike the crossbar before rebounding straight into his hands at a more convenient height to catch.
Career
Club
Gus played for Redburn Rovers leading them to the English championship title and then the European Cup.
International
Gus was the leader of the Gannet Island in the World Cup of 1966. He singlehandedly took his unkmown team to the final at Wembley and he purposedly missed a [enalty to equalise as the Queen of England was watching.
Legacy
Gus had probably the most powerful shot in comic history, possibly alongside Hamish Balfour. He was the leader of any team he played.
In December 2022, Gull, administrator of the champweareunited.proboards.com put him as the best of all time (Grant was third and Race 2nd), while renowkned member jimmygrant93 also voted for him as the best in history (2nd was Roy Race, third Johan Seegrun, fourth Jimmy Grant and fifth Zeus Nicarange from HotShot).
