Jimmy Grant is a fictional English footballer who played as a striker. He is considered as one of the best players ever in fictional comic football.

He appeared in the comic strips of the British boys' comic Victor during the 80s and 90s. The strip was named The dreams of Jimmy Grant and soon changed to The goals of Jimmy Grant and was last appeared in Victor published by DC Thomson until 1992. From 1994 until early 2000s the strip appeared in the Football Picture Story Monthlies.

Career

Club

Grant scores for Glasgow Royals.

He got a transfer to Riverton United at the age of 17 to replace injured Kevin Nicklish, in a 250.000-pound deal.

After a season he was signed by Italian side Ramoli for a fee of 3 million pounds. He returned to Riverton United as a free agent and played with them in the Australian and Mexican tour. Due to an injury issue, Pearson didnt offer him a permanent deal and Grant chose to sign as player-manager for a historic club: Alton Rovers. He led them to promotion and League Cup triumph, before signing for Scottish powerhouse Glasgow Royals in the summer of 1989.

In 1990 he signed for Stainford City, a club dubbed as the eternal runners up. Within two years he led them to a League Cup, a Charity Shield, a championship and the European Cup. A fire that had destroyed financial problems to the club after a stand was burnt down, forced City to sell him alongside Dave Porter to Spanish giants Valdid. Before his big transfer he enjoyed a tour with Stainford City in Africa and a short loan in USA playing for the Western All-Stars.

In Spain, he lived in a grand villa with Porter. It seemed like his greatest transfer of his life at the time. However, Grant didnt settle in Spain after tough German manager Franz Scheiller tried to change his style and he ended up playing with the reserves.

Stainford City were bottom of the table and returned for Grant in November 1992, signing him again in the last episode of Victor comics.

In April 1994 the story ressumed in the Football Picture Story Monthly with Grant returning to City who were in the Second tier (assuming that City relegated in the 92/93 season and maybe Grant returned to Valdid again within that season). Grant helped City win promotion to the top flight.

In later years through FPSM he would return to Scotland, for Celdeen and also to Spain for Real Setib. He even had a spell in Brazil.

Grant also had a successful stint with Denby City before returning to Stainford City, now in third division, to end his career at the age of 35.

Gold was called up to the England national team for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Style of play

Jimmy’s story began in the early 80's in Victor running alongside the great United storyline. Indeed he would eventually join United, albeit for one season only. His likeability factor for me though came from his Gary Lineker style attitude. Always willing to help, supremely talented in front of goal, and an eye for an opening.

He was in the mould of Lineker as well, the goody two shoe persona, never sent off, never one to cause friction on the pitch, he let his skills and feet do the talking for him. It was his ability to always offer help and advice though that ranks him so highly, not only was he helpful to his team mates, old and young alike, he was particularly willing to help kids achieve their dream, of playing professional football.

Legacy

Unlike legendary Roy Race, Grant played many times for England in the DC Thomson publications. The footballcomicheroes website chose him as the 3d best player of all time only behind Johnny Dexter and Jimmy Slade, in 2014.[1]

He is one of the few players in comic history to win the European Cup with three clubs (Ramoli, Glasgow Royals, Stainford City), while he also played there with Real Setib without winning it. His favourite club was Stainford City where he was adored and a fan one day said that he was as good as Diego Maradona.

In December 2022, Gull, administrator of the champweareunited.proboards.com put him as the 3d best of all time (Gorgeous Gus top, and Race 2nd).

Joe Pearson said about Grant when he signed him at 17 that he was one of the best young players I ever seen.

Personal life

Grant was an orphan and grew up with his aunt. He was single for years, with rumours going on that he was gay.
