Goro Maki (Japanese: 牧 吾郎 Hepburn: Maki Gorō) is a human character of the Godzilla franchise.
Overview
Name
In Son of Godzilla, Maki's first and last names were not inverted into the Western format in the international English dub for Son of Godzilla, so his name is given as Maki Goro.
Showa era (1967)
In the 1967 film, Son of Godzilla, Goro Maki is seen as the main human protagonist. A reporter searching for a scoop, Maki stumbled upon the United Nations (U.N.) scientific team undertaking Operation Sherbet on Sollgel Island. Maki worked with the scientists, who were hoping to find a way to expand the world food supply by manipulating the weather, but he instead became stranded with them on the island when the experiment went awry. Maki befriended Saeko Matsumiya, who helped him and the others survive before they eventually made contact with the U.N., narrowly escaping the wrath of the monster Kumonga. Maki and the others were subsequently rescued from the island.
Heisei era (1984)
In the 1984 film, The Return of Godzilla, Goro Maki is seen as the main human protagonist. Continuing his role as a reporter, but this time for the Tohto Times. Maki discovered a derelict vessel named the "Yahata-Maru V" adrift. He rescued Hiroshi Okumura, the sole survivor aboard the ship, reporting that a giant creature had killed his crewmates. Maki was issued an order preventing him from reporting this, as this monster Okumura saw was "Godzilla". Maki instead worked with a professor named Makoto Hayashida to find a way to defeat Godzilla. Falling in love with Hayashida's assistant and Okumura's sister Naoko, Maki helped complete a magnetic wave transmitter that Hayashida used to lure Godzilla toward the crater of Mount Mihara.
Reiwa era (2016)
In the 2016 film, Shin Godzilla, Goro Maki is revealed to be an unseen supporting character in the film. A mysterious biology professor who was expelled from Japan,[2] Maki worked for an American energy firm and discovered a new lifeform born from consuming nuclear waste dumped on the seafloor in the 1950s, which he named "Gojira". Maki vanished aboard his yacht the Glory-Maru in 2016, shortly before the creature he discovered made landfall in Tokyo's Kamata district. Apparently having disappeared, Maki left behind some of his research, which later proved crucial in leading to ShinGoji's defeat. Japan was left to ponder whether Maki had intentionally unleashed Shin Gojira as a sort of test of the Japanese people.
Reception
Some theories regarding the 5th form of Shin Godzilla by individuals hint that Goro Maki, the scientist who created ShinGoji, had merged with the creature resulting in the creation of the humanoid forms.[3]
