Career[edit]
Smith took over as CEO of Republic in 2005. During his tenure, he has led campaigns against the Sovereign Grant, royal secrecy, and restricted access to the Royal Archives.[3]
He has written for The Guardian on multiple occasions, criticizing the relationship between the British monarchy and Middle Eastern counterparts, the cost of the monarchy, secrecy from the Freedom of Information Act, and alleged political activity by the monarchy.[4]
Smith frequently appears on the BBC, advocating for an elected and accountable head of state. The Daily Mail criticized the BBC for inviting Smith onto BBC News prior to the birth of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.[5]
