The Grand Lodge of Oregon A. F. and A. M..[1] was formed at Oregon City, Oregon in 1851[2].

History[edit]

In 1846 three Freemasons[3] named Joseph Hull, Peter G. Stewart and William P. Dougherty placed a notice in the advertising columns of the Oregon Spectator[4], which appeared in the February 5, 1846 edition[5]

The Masonic notice placed within the February 5th, 1846 edition of the Oregon Spectator read as follows:

“The members of the Masonic fraternity in Oregon territory are respectfully requested to meet at the City Hotel in Oregon City, on the 21st, to adopt some measures to obtain a charter for a lodge.”

William P. Dougherty undertook to find a means of getting the petition to Missouri. He secured the services of brother Joel Palmer, later remember of Lafayette lodge #3, and he delivered the petition to brother James a period Spratt at Platte city, Missouri.

On the written instructions of brother Doherty, and at that brother’s expense, the petition was presented to the Grand Lodge of Missouri, on October 17th, 1846, who granted them a charter, as Multnomah Lodge No. 84, to be located at Oregon City, Oregon Territory.

Several months elapsed before the charter could be started on its way to the brethren in Oregon City.
