Grandstand Central is a sports website and podcast network, founded in Toronto, Canada in 2017..[1][2]

History[edit]

Grandstand Central was launched in 2017 on Medium, a platform that once hosted publishing mainstays like The Ringer, Backchannel and The Awl.

At launch, Grandstand Central had a staff of 13, and as a weekly publication, focused primarily on issues like politics, gender, money, race, science, fandom and social issues, and the ways they intersected with sports.

The site first gained notoriety when it criticised the NHL and Anaheim Ducks for releasing a video showing Ryan Kesler walking around the Ducks' office while naked, a video that was released at a pivotal moment in the #metoo movement[3]. The site has also published an exclusive with former NHLer Theo Fleury[4] where he revealed how depression ended his career,[5] an interview with infamous Tongan Flag-bearer Pita Taufatofua about how he learned to ski on a beach [6], and a full break-down of the players that broke the colour barrier for each respective NHL franchise.
