Great Steak (formerly Great Steak and Potato Company) is a chain of fast-food restaurants specializing in cheesesteaks and potato dishes. Great Steak is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kahala Brands of Scottsdale, Arizona. The chain was founded in Dayton, Ohio, in 1982. As of 2010, Great Steak had nearly 160 locations in the United States and abroad.[2][3]
History[edit]
Italian-born and Canadian-raised Nicola "Nick" Lanni left his job as a manager at a private resort island in the Bahamas after meeting his future wife while she was vacationing at the sort. He relocated to Hamilton, Ohio, in order to marry her. In 1982, Lanni used his skills in food and hospitality management to open a Philadelphia-style cheese steaks restaurant in the food court in the Dayton Mall that eventually became Great Steak. The initial name of the business was called Great Steak & Fry Company. By 1992, Lanni's company had 110 locations, 80 of which are franchised.[4] The company had changed its name to Great Steak & Potato Company sometime before 2000when it had 225 locations worldwide.[5]
Lanni sold the company to Kahala Brands for an undisclosed amount in 2004. At the time of the sale, the company had 251 restaurants in the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. Lanni retained nine corporate-owned stores in Greater Cincinnati and development rights in the area and became a Cincinnati-area franchisee.[1]
The following year, Kahala signed a deal to expand the brand into South Korea.[6]
