Greece has participated in the OGAE Song Contest 28 times since 1988 and never missed a contest since. Greece won for the first time in 1994 with "Ftais" song by Sabrina and for the second time in 2006 with "Mambo" song by Helena Paparizou. The Greek national broadcaster, Ellinikí Radiofonía Tileórasi (ERT) organizes the process for the selection of the Greek entry.[1]

History[edit]

  • Six years after its debut, Greece won for the first time in 1994 with Sabrina singing "Ftais". In 2006, Greece won for the second time the contest with Helena Paparizou singing "Mambo". "Mambo" become the biggest summer hit in 2006 in Greece and reached the first places in the charts from Greece and Cyprus and reached the Top 5 in Sweden. Furthermore, the song has been released in a number of countries throughout Europe including (in some of them the release was limited); Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. In some other countries, it hasn't been released physically but it has entered radio airplay charts: Estonia, France, Japan, Romania, Russia, Serbia and others. Also, "Mambo" become platinum in Greece and gold in Sweden.
  • Mambo received 244 points, which tied for the most points receiving a country in the OGAE Song Contest. That record was beaten 3 years later where Coldplay with their song "Viva La Vida" received 4 points more (248 points)
  • Before Greece's win, the highest score was second place, achieved by Anna Vissi in 1988 with "Ta Mathitika Hronia" and then again by Mando in 1991 with "Stihimatizo". Greece's least successful result was at 19th place in 2010 with the song "Ego Gia Dio" (English, "Me For Two") by Tania Tsanaklidou, which received 23 points.
  • In 1995, the 8th OGAE Song Contest was held in Athens, Greece, following Sabrina's victory the previous year. The two hosts were popular singer, and former contestant, Galandis Loukakis and Greek American presenter Alexandra. The singer representing Greece in their own country was popular Greek artist Stefanos Korkolis.
  • Greece has been the most successful country of the OGAE Song Contest. They had placed within the top-ten position after advancing into the finals every year since then: sixth in 2002, fifth in 2003, seventh in 2004, second in 2005, first in 2006, third in 2007, third in 2008 and second in 2009. However, this record was broken in 2010, when Tania Tsanaklidou only placed 19th place with her song "Ego Gia Dio". However, in the televoting, Tania did place in top 10 in the finals, she finished 9th with 89 points. Although Greece's luck came back in 2011 when "Kleista Ta Stomata" finished in 9th place which means that the record was reopened.
  • Also, Greece haw hosted the 1999 Contest, because OGAE Poland, had won the previous year's contest, and was unable to meet the demands of hosting the event. The 1999 Contest, was the first time that were used CDs, since all the previous made with cartridges.
