Dr Gregory James Edward Dickens MRCVS (/ˈdɪkɪnz/; born 7 December 1985), is a British veterinarian, photographer, inventor, author, firebreather, and track cyclist.

Early life and education[edit]

Gregory James Edward Dickens was born on 7 December 1985 in Jersey, the second of five children of boat broker James William Francis Dickens, and the first of consultant Pamela Marian Dickens (née Cox). Dickens was born a few weeks early, whilst his mother was on holiday in Jersey.[1] Dickens grew up in Basingstoke with his younger brother Christopher.

Dickens attended Kempshott Junior School in primary school, and then went on to study at Wellington College during secondary school. Dickens graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Cambridge, where he met his wife, Dr Guen Bradbury MRCVS, and is an alumni of Selwyn College, Cambridge.[2]

In 2004, Dickens won a gold medal in the 15th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in Brisbane, Queensland.[3]

Career[edit]

In 2008, at the age of 22, Dickens became a member of Selwyn's amateur dramatics society The Mighty Players. Dickens starred as 'Dr Chives' in the college production of Alice: A Freshers Tale.[4] Dickens eccentric personality and flair for the dramatic also led him to become a professional firebreather on major motion pictures.[5]

In 2009, Dickens had some of his photographs exhibited at Corpus Christi College Chapel.[6] Dickens has also published a photo book of Cambridge College chapels. Striking upon the notion that a technique used in digital x-radiography could be modified for use in architectural photography, Dickens began a four-year project to capture the chapels in a level of depth and detail never before attempted. After mounting the images as an exhibition, he has worked with the Deans and Chaplains of every college to present the collection in this hardbound volume. Each photograph used in the book was chosen to highlight the differences in mood, tone and style between these buildings.[2] In 2010, Dickens founded his own innovation company, consulting on innovation and IP strategy for national companies in advanced ergonomics, biomedical technology and high-tech product development. Dickens also moved to Manchester during this time to pursue a career as a professional track cyclist after being selected as a hopeful for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.[7][8][9][10]

In 2013, Dickens was the Head Vet at the Centre for Education, Research & Conservation of Primates and Nature (CERCOPAN) in Calabar, Nigeria for a short period of time.[11][12]
