Greg Nowak (The Octopus)

Greg Nowak (The Octopus) is Montana's most well-known chess player, earning the nickname The Octopus for his exhibition games at which he plays up to 50 opponents simultaneously. For 17 years, Nowak has been hosting chess tournaments, exhibitions, and teaching chess, earning a reputation as the champion of the game in Montana.[1]

As of 2010, Nowak had won the Montana Chess Championship sixteen times.[2]

"In 2000 at the Kalispell Center Mall, he played 65 people at the same time, beating everyone."[1] In 2007, he sought a sponsor to play 76 simultaneous games, and break Bobby Fischer's record of 75 simultaneous games.[3] The current record is held by 604 simultaneous games, held by Iranian GM Ehsan Ghaem-Maghami.[4]

Nowak has also won championships in Wyoming and Idaho. As a teenager, Nowak played Bobby Fischer to a draw.[1] In 2009, his chess rating was 2129. [5]

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Nowak has lived in Montana since 1993 and currently resides in Missoula.[1]
