Grepsr (/grɛpsər/) is a software company based in Kathmandu, Nepal that provides a web scraping and data acquisition platform. It was founded by Nepali schoolmates Amit Chaudhary and Subrat Basnet.[1]
Grepsr is best known for its eponymous web-based application and Google Chrome extension.
A third product, Gokyo, a web-based geo-analytics tool, is currently in the final stages of development and scheduled to go live later in 2018.
History
Grepsr started out as the founders’ weekend project.[1] Based in Australia initially, the founders decided to return to Nepal and established Grepsr in its current form in January 2012.[2] The company’s office is currently located in Naxal, Kathmandu, Nepal.
Despite investing personal savings and launching the product in early 2012, Grepsr struggled to attract customers in the first month. According to co-founder Subrat, the company got their first big break when a big company launched in Asia in February 2012 and contacted them to supply their data. Business started picking up, and Grepsr had 15 clients in the first two months. The company broke even by the end of the third month.[1]
Grepsr’s user-base grew steadily to 300 by the end of 2012,[3] and as of August 2018, the company has users in more than 40 countries. Their current clientele includes brands like Target, Groupon, Twitter, GE Capital, Boston Consulting Group, etc.[1]
Etymology
The name “Grepsr” comes from the word “grep”, which is a Unix-based "command-line utility for searching plain-text data sets for lines that match a regular expression"[4] and the suffix “-sr”, which refers to service.[1]
Motivation
Grepsr was built to provide users and businesses an easy and intuitive platform to gather available data from websites, regardless of their skill level.[3] As co-founder Amit puts it, “While most of our competitors are either a DIY tool or service based companies – we combine the best of both worlds and provide customers with the apt platform for their needs.”[5]
Products
- Grepsr for Chrome: A free light-weight web scraping tool for data extraction on the go.[6] Users can easily extract any website’s data using an intuitive point-and-click toolkit and turn it into a spreadsheet in seconds.[7]
- Grepsr Concierge: A service that provides a custom solution to projects too complex for the Chrome extension.[8]
- Gokyo: A turn-key retail/dealer outlets location analytics platform.[9]
