Grizelle González

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Grizelle González is a soil ecologist from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her most notable work has been focused on soil ecology, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem ecology in tropical and subalpine forests.

Early life and education[edit]

Early life[edit]

Grizelle González was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She grew up enjoying the outdoors and has taken a lot of inspiration from both the men and women in her family. They taught her the balance between working hard and finding time to have fun[1]. She was interested in the arts when she was in middle school. During her undergraduate and gradate education she focused on biology and ecology.

Education[edit]

González obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1993. Her original idea was to attend medical school and she was even accepted to a couple of medical schools. She joined an ecophysiology lab one summer. The research she did focused on mangrove forests in Puerto Rico and they looked at the earthworms living in the nearby soils. After this research experience, she decided to pursue a Master of Science in soil ecology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1996. Her thesis was on earthworm abundance in a tropical forest in Puerto Rico. She then obtained her PhD from the University of Colorado-Boulder in soil ecology and biology in 1999. Her dissertation was focused on microbes, plant litter, and soil fauna in both tropical and subalpine forests.

Career and research[edit]

Professional experience[edit]

Grizelle started her professional career as a Research Associate at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1999. In 2000, she began her career at the United States Forest Service (USFS) International Institute of Tropical Forests (IITF) as a Research Ecologist. The USFS is part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 2003 she became the Director of the Sabana Field Research Station in Puerto Rico. In 2012, she was promoted as Project Leader in the Research and Development Unit in the USFS IITF. She also started working at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She was Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Biology in 2004. In 2010, she became Associated Faculty at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus in the Department of Environmental Sciences[2].

Fields of research[edit]

After making her switch from the medical field to ecology and gaining experience in ecophysiology, most of her research has been focused on soil ecology, biogeochemistry, and nutrient cycling in tropical forests involving earthworms with plant litter and decomposition. She has incorporated subalpine and temperate forests in her research when she worked on her Ph.D. in Colorado and worked in Alaska. Now that her work is based in Puerto Rico, much of her research in the USFS focuses on tropical forest ecology.
