Gryphon Investors is a San Francisco-based private equity firm focused on the lower end of the U.S. middle-market.[1] The firm conducts leveraged buyout acquisitions of companies in business services, consumer, health care,[2] and industrial growth[3] verticals and has been managing over $2.5 billion of equity commitment and capital since 1997.[4]
History[edit]
Gryphon was founded in 1995 by R. David Andrews,[5] the firm's current CEO and Managing General Partner.
In 1997, Gryphon began to formalize an operations-focused investing approach that led to the establishment of the Gryphon Operations Resources Group in 1999. This 10-member group has been led by Dennis F. O'Brien since 2008.[6]
In November 2016, Gryphon announced the closing of the Gryphon Partners IV, L.P. fund, with equity commitments of $1.1 billion.[7] The firm also announced the close of their first mezzanine fund in August 2017 with $100 million in commitments.[8]
Transactions[edit]
Since inception, the firm has invested $2.0 billion in over 40 primary control acquisitions and 83 add-ons. Notable transactions include C.B. Fleet Laboratories,[9] Eight O'Clock Coffee, Intelligrated,[10] Trinity Consultants,[11] Jensen Hughes,[12] Smile Brands,[13] Consolidated Fire Protection[14] and Lawler Foods.[15]
In August, 2017, Gryphon Investors finalized its acquisition of Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG) from Ares Management. OBHG is an obstetric hospitalist and the leading provider of on-site, board-certified obstetric and gynecology (“OB”) hospitalist programs and related physician support services across the United States. [16] In April, 2017, Gryphon Investors made a majority investment in Wind River Environmental, a Massachusetts-based provider of non-hazardous liquid environmental waste solutions.[17]
