"Guest Starring John Noble" is the seventeenth and penultimate episode of the third season of the American science fiction superhero television series Legends of Tomorrow. The episode follows the titular team trying to stop the demon Mallus by fixing "anachronisms", or things and people displaced through time. The episode aired The CW on April 2, 2018.
Plot[edit]
The Legends stop Gorilla Grodd from killing future president Barack Obama in the 1980s, preventing another anachronism and further delaying Mallus' release. Damien realizes that Nora will be killed when Mallus is released, causing him to temporarily ally himself with the Legends. By getting actor John Noble to impersonate the voice of Mallus, the team tricks Nora onto the Waveriderand contains her. Ava asks Rip if he knew that she was a clone; Rip reveals that she is the 12th Ava clone he has recruited because she is such a talented agent. Amaya returns to 1992 Zambesi to change history and secure her family's future. Nate, rather than try to convince her to return, elects to help her instead.
Sara decides to allow this to happen, causing the final anachronism that will free Mallus, having concluded that the only way to stop the demon is to release him. She gives Damien the Death Totem, while the rest of the team wields their own individual totems. Damien realizes that Nora is still alive within Mallus and releases Grodd to destroy Zambesi, preventing Mallus' release. Nate subdues Grodd with the Earth Totem, allowing Mallus to break free from his prison.
Production[edit]
In January 2017, Legends of Tomorrow was renewed by The CW for a third season.[1] "Guest Starring John Noble" stars Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance,[2] Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya Jiwe,[3] Amy Louise Pemberton as Gideon, Nick Zano as Nate Heywood, and Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory.[2] Additional guest appearances include Neal McDonough as Damien Darhk,[4] Arthur Darvill as Agent Rip Hunter,[4] Courtney Ford as Nora Darhk,[5] Jes Macallan as Director Ava Sharpe,[6] David Sobolov as Gorilla Grodd,[7] and Lovell Adams-Gray as Barry Obama[8] and John Noble as both himself,[9] and the season's main villain Mallus.[10]
Sellers called her experience playing a 72-year-old version of Amaya Jiwe "horrible" because of the practical elements that were involved in creating the character's look, particularly the makeup. She recalled, "I was sent to a full head cast [...] I was covered in plaster from my shoulders up with just two breathing holes for two hours. They then created a whole new face and neck for me that was glued on and spray painted over the course of four hours. The end result was freakishly convincing."[11]
Reception[edit]
Jim Dandeneau of Den of Geek praised the dynamics between Sara and Damien Darhk in the episode, humanizing the ladder character and making him relatable and "astoundingly successful." Dandeneaue rated the episode 3 out of 5 stars, saying that "Grodd is nominally successful, defeating Amaya’s daughter in maybe the worst looking fight and effects scene on the show in a while, but he is eventually defeated by the Legends, saving the village and freeing Mallus. Mallus, by the way, is just a big generic looking demon."[12] Jennifer Ann of TellTale TV praised the totems in the season, saing "Since Legends of Tomorrow is an ensemble show built around its team, the decision to make various members totem-bearers is a great way to give them all an important part in the effort to defeat Mallus."[13]
