Guided Access is a feature that allows iOS users to restrict access to specific functions or applications on their devices. This feature is particularly useful in educational settings, where teachers may want to restrict access to certain apps or functions during class time, or for parents who want to restrict their children's access to certain apps or functions on their device.

    Overview[edit]

Guided Access is designed to increase accessibility and control access to an iOS device. It is particularly useful for users with disabilities, such as those with motor skill impairments or attention disorders. The feature is also helpful in situations where the device is shared with others, as it can prevent accidental taps or unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Guided Access offers several features to help users control access to their device. Accessibility options allow users to enable features such as VoiceOver while restricting access to other apps. Time limits can be set for the use of a specific app or the device as a whole. Motion control can be disabled to prevent accidental activation of certain features.

    Usage[edit]

To activate Guided Access, one should open the Settings app, tap on "Accessibility", then scroll down to the very bottom, and tap on "Guided Access". It can also be searched for. They should then toggle the switch next to "Guided Access" to turn it on and set a passcode by accessing "Passcode Settings". One may also opt for using Face ID or Touch ID to exit Guided Access. The passcode will be required to exit Guided Access. By default, the passcode is six digits, but it may be four digits if the device's native passcode is only four digits. To enable Guided Access, the chosen app much be launched. After, if the device has a home button, it must be used to enable Guided Access. If not, the power button should be used. Either of these buttons, depending on the model must be clicked three times to enter Guided Access. When used in an app for the first time, the user will be prompted with a screen that will ask what features they want to restrict, enable, or keep the same. To access this, the "Options" section is the bottom left corner must be clicked. To finally enable Guided Access, one should click "Start". If the passcode wasn’t set earlier in settings, there will be a prompt asking to create one.

Ending a Guided Access session involves tapping the home or power button three times, entering the passcode, and clicking "End". If Touch ID or Face ID was enabled, one can also press the home button or power button twice to exit.
