Guido Mancusi ( born in June 14 1966 ) is an Italian-Austrian conductor and composer. He is a conducting professor at Musik and Art University of the City of Vienna and kapellmeister in Volksoper wien in Vienna, Austria.


Early Life[edit]

Mancusi was born in Portici Italy. He began his musical education studying piano with his father Enrico Mancusi, and composition with renowed Nino Rota. After the unexpected death of his father in his early age, the family moved to Vienna, where Mancusi entered Vienna Boy's choir (Wiener Sängerknaben) as a soprano soloist, and toured around the world. He then continued music study in Vienna Music School Musikgymnasium wien, at the same time, he also studied bassoon and singing at the Musik and Art University of the City of Vienna. After he received his matura, he continued his studies at The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Wiener Musikhochschule), where he studied composition with Urbanner and conducting with Karl Österreicher. He founded the Barockensemble Vindobona in 1985 while he was student. The ensemble offered regular concerts, concentrating on the baroque and classical repertoire until 1995, during the period, he directed "Dido and Aeneas", "The Fairy Queen", and "La Contessina". Mancusi received his master's degree with distinction on the thesis of Paul Hindemith in 1992.

Career[edit]

Opera conductor[edit]

Mancusi started his conducting career at age 23, directed baroque ensemble, a cappella choir, orchestra, and opera. The early opera engagements include "Eine Nacht in Venedig", "Wiener Blut", "Der Vogelhändler" and "Die Csárdásfürstin" where he was Kapellmeister at Stadttheater St. Pölten.

In 1994, Mancusi served as assistant to Riccardo Muti for Walküre and Mephistophele at La Scala in Milan. In 1995 he assisted Adam Fischer at the Bayreuth Festival. These has led him to Vienna Volksoper and the Wiener Kammeroper Debut. The same year, Mancusi also becomes conducting professor at Music and Art of the City of Vienna where he directs the resident chamber choir, the Capella Conservatiorana, and regular concerts on historical instruments.

As assistant conductor, he also worked with Carlos Kalmar of the Niederösterreichische Tonkünstlerorchester from 2000–2002.

In 1999 he started working in Volksoper Wien, Wiener Kammeroper, Schauspielhaus Wien, the Klagenfurt Theatre(2003-2007), theater Erfurt(2000-2002), Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Wiener Festwochen, KlangBogen Wien, England (Consort of Ancient Music London), Argentina (Teatro de Bahia Blanca), Japan (Narita Chamber Orchestra and Takasaki Symphonic Orchestra), the USA (The New York Baroque Players), the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, St. Petersburg, Mosko, Helsinki, Stockholm, Roma, Valencia, Toronto, Washington and Baltimore. In 2002 Guido Mancusi was appointed principal conductor of the Landestheater Klagenfurt and had 2 premieres in Mozart Cosí fan tutte and Tchaikovsky Pique Dame.

Since 2004 he becomes Kapellmeister at Volksoper Wien, where he engaged to "Gräfin Máriza", "Carmen", "Le Concours", "Carmina/Bolero/Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun", "Walzertraum", "Turandot", "Shererazade/Bilder", "Hänsel und Gretel", "König Karotte", "Pinocchio" and "Meine Schwester und ich". The ballet Carmina Burana was awarded Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis 2013 (Schikaneder Prize) - "the best ballet project" in Austria music theater in 2013.

As Kapellmeister and artistic director, he has been worked in St. Pölten City Theater(1989-1992), Landestheater Coburg, Raimund Theater, Theater an der Wien, Graz Oper and Kiel Opera House(1998-1999), Vereinigten Bühnen Wien(1994-1995), festival Oper Klosterneuburg (1997-2000). As chef conductor, he takes over Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra since 1998, in addition, he has founded chamber opera schönbrunn, focusing on Vienna classical.

In 2016 he was invited by Irina Gulyaeva for second annual “All for Autism” benefit concert in Musikverein. conducted Slovak Radio Sympnoy Orchestra performing together with opera singers Yusif Eyvazov, Anna Netrebko. They intended to raise awareness of Autism, which affects 80,000 Austrians — 20,000 of whom are based in Vienna. The gala event also raised funds to give access for early diagnosis and treatment for children and improving autism therapies to greater aid independent living.

Has being working with prestigious singers such as Natalia Ushakova, Nikolai Baskov, Melanie Holiday, Neil Shicoff, Michael Schade, Maria Candida; pianist Boris Giltburg, Violinist Bijan Khadem-Missagh, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Alexej Igudesman, Rainer Honeck and Barnábas Kelemen.

Choir conductor[edit]

1988-1996 Mancusi was music director of the Chorus Viennensis, the men choir formed by former Vienna Boys Choir members. They have won the first place at the Fifth International Franz Schubert Male Choir Competition in Vienna and were awarded the prize for the best interpretation. During 1995, Guido directed the choir performed and recorded the entire repertory for male choir by Paul Hindemith. Two years later the ensemble recorded, for Philips and Polygram, all compositions for men choir written by Franz Schubert.

He worked as Ballet Repetitor and Choir conductor at Oper Graz for Das Land des Lächelns, Der Nussknacker.

In 1995, he worked as Choir conductor and Kapellmeister at Landestheater Coburg on the works of Madame Pompadour, Der Bettelstudent, Cavalleria Rusticana, Cabaret, Chicago, Lohengrin, Otello and Aida. He was frequently chosen as chorus master for performances of the Wiener Singakademie and the Concentus Vocalis, collaborating with conductors such as Trevor Pinnock, John Eliot Gardiner, Yehudi Menuhin, Eliahu Inbal and Georges Prêtre.

Composition[edit]

His recognition as a composer began as winner of first prizes at the International Music Festival in Tokyo (1983) and at the Franz Schubert Composition Competition in Vienna (1997).

Mancusi's composition has been commissioned by many major orchestras and festivals, including the Musik and Art University of the City of Vienna, the Jeunesse Musicale (concerto for percussion), the Salzburg Summer Academy (orchestra concert), the Wiener Kammerphilharmonie (suite for strings), the Wien Modern 1993 (Oesterreichische Kammerphilharmonie), Mörbisch Festival (Children Opera "Anton und Maria") and opera camp at Salzburg Festival.

He also wrote music for several other artists and ensembles. His oratorio Die Mutter Erde premiered in Vienna's Musikverein in 1992.

Since 1994 Guido Mancusi has regularly been recording engineer for KOCH Records, working with orchestras such as the Wiener Philharmoniker or the Haydn Sinfonietta. Guido has served as jury at the National Children's Music Competition, the International Choral Competition in Vorarlberg, and the Concorso Internazionale di Canto Riccardo Zandonai in Italy.
