HIP Hotels is a privately held company providing marketing services to a represented collection of over 150 boutique hotels in over 40 countries worldwide. The company's headquarters is in London with an office in New York City. The HIP Hotels brand was originally founded by photographer Herbert Ypma..[1] in the 1990s whose HIP Hotels book series contributed to a new kind of travel publishing and included titles such as HIP Hotels: Atlas,[2] HIP Hotels: London,[3] HIP Hotels: France[4] and HIP Hotels: City[5]
Member hotels[edit]
HIP Hotels represents a selection of member hotels who are owned and operated independently.[6] Member hotels are chosen to be a part of the collection dependent on unique properties of interior design, detail and location. Members include hotels from Alila Hotels and Resorts, Dorchester Collection and Belmond Limited.
History[edit]
The HIP Hotels brand was established by Herbert Ypma in the 1990s with the introduction of his guidebook series, targeted at people seeking to stay at individual and unique hotels.[7] The series was first published by Thames and Hudson in 1999[8] and two of his books went on to chart at number one and two in the Top 10 list of the UK's best selling travel books.[9]
Ypma has been featured in a range of high profile media articles for his expertise and recommendations of the best HIP Hotels to stay at across the globe.
In September 2008, HIP Hotels launched a partnership with Virgin Holidays to create Virgin Holidays + HIP Hotels,[10][11] a bespoke tour operator providing holidays to luxury and boutique hotels around the world[12]
In 2014, HIP Hotels was acquired by a private equity firm.[13]
Publications[edit]
The Grand Tour[14] by HIP Hotels was published in 2016, a modern reinterpretation of the 17th and 18th-century custom of a traditional trip of Europe known as a Grand Tour. The book showcases a number of Italy's unique hotels.
In 2016, HIP Hotels published its first instalment in a series called Spectrum.[15] It presents a series of coffee table books that showcase photography of its member hotels from both external photographers and in-house photographers. The book follows the sequence of the colour spectrum, focusing on the vibrancy of the hotel members, interiors, details and locations. They have since published Spectrum II[16] in 2017, Spectrum III[17] in 2018 and Spectrum IV[18] in 2019.
